VEP application: how to register your Singapore car before you drive into Malaysia
A VEP application happens online, in two parts. You register your profile and car at vep.jpj.gov.my. The confirmation email then sends you to VEPAMS (vepams.jpj.gov.my), where you log in with the same email and password, choose how you get the RFID tag and pay. JPJ's fees are RM10 for processing and RM30 to the collection agent, plus courier if you have the tag posted.

How to apply for a VEP, step by step, on vep.jpj.gov.my and VEPAMS
The VEP registration takes seven steps across two JPJ websites. Get your documents ready first, because the portal times out on long sessions.
- 1Set up a Touch 'n Go eWallet. The tag pays the RM20 road charge from it each time you enter Malaysia, so it has to exist before you drive in.
- 2Go to vep.jpj.gov.my, register your profile and add your car. Use an email you check daily: everything after this arrives there.
- 3Open the confirmation email from JPJ and click its link to VEPAMS.
- 4Log in to VEPAMS with the same email and password, then upload your documents.
- 5Choose how you get the tag (collect it at a centre, or have it posted) and pay by card.
- 6Wait for approval. The status shows in VEPAMS.
- 7Have the tag fitted on the headlight and activated. The checkpoint only accepts an activated tag.

Which documents does JPJ need for a VEP application?
Have these as files before you start:

If someone else will collect the tag for you, they need an authorisation letter from the owner.
How much does a VEP application cost?
You pay when you order the tag in VEPAMS:

How long does VEP approval take, and will it be ready for my trip?
JPJ publishes no processing time. In our experience most applications are approved in 5 to 10 working days.
The tag is the slower part if you have it posted: about 2 to 3 weeks to arrive. With a trip less than three weeks away, have the tag fitted in Johor Bahru on the day you collect it instead. Check where yours stands on our VEP status guide.
How to check your car is VEP-ready before you leave for JB
Only an activated tag counts. Since 1 July 2025, cars that are pre-registered but not activated have been fined at the checkpoint too.
Before you leave, check four things:
- VEPAMS shows your tag as activated.
- Your road tax and insurance are valid. Malaysia only lets in cars that have both.
- Your Touch 'n Go eWallet has ringgit in it for the RM20 road charge. Top-up guide.
- You will be back within 90 days. Longer stays have to be declared to JPJ and Customs.
What happens if you drive into Malaysia without a valid VEP?
You get a RM300 compound, and you have to pay it and register before you can drive out again. That has applied everywhere in Malaysia since 15 November 2025, not only at the Johor checkpoints, and company-owned cars are included. If the case goes to court, the fine can reach RM2,000 or six months in jail.
