What is a VEP?

A VEP, or Vehicle Entry Permit, is the permit Malaysia requires for every Singapore-registered vehicle driving into the country. It is issued by Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) and paired with an RFID tag linked to a Touch 'n Go eWallet, which the gantries at the Causeway and Second Link scan. Without an approved VEP and an activated tag, a Singapore car can be turned back or fined at the checkpoint.

    Who needs a VEP?

Every Singapore-registered vehicle entering Malaysia by road needs a VEP - private cars, motorcycles, company and commercial vehicles, and rentals. It applies whether you cross once a year or every day for work. Malaysian-registered cars do not need one; the VEP is specifically for foreign vehicles.

How the VEP works, step by step

    1. 1Register your vehicle in the VEP system at the official JPJ portal (vep.jpj.gov.my) and upload your Singapore log card, ID, and vehicle photos.
    2. 2JPJ reviews and approves the VEP, usually within 5 to 10 working days.
    3. 3You collect an RFID tag, have it fitted to the vehicle, and link it to your Touch 'n Go eWallet.
    4. 4At the border, the gantry reads the tag against your approved VEP, and the road charge and tolls are deducted from the eWallet.

VEP vs RFID tag vs Touch 'n Go

These three get confused. The VEP is the permit (the approval). The RFID tag is the device on your vehicle that identifies it at the gantry. The Touch 'n Go eWallet is the account linked to the tag that pays the road charge and tolls. You need all three working together to cross.

Do it yourself, or let us handle it

You can apply for the VEP yourself, for free, at vep.jpj.gov.my. Many Singapore drivers use a service like ours because the portal can error out and the RFID tag has to be installed and activated correctly. We handle the VEP application, on-site RFID installation, and more - see our transparent pricing or compare applying yourself versus using us.
