Singapore to Genting Highlands by car: route, tolls and parking
Written and reviewed by the Radiant VEP Solutions team.
The drive to Genting from Singapore: the North-South Expressway, Middle Ring Road 2 and the Karak Highway, tolls in ringgit, the RM5 charge on the hill road since May 2026, the rule on convoys, where to park, and when to break the trip overnight.
In this article
To go from Singapore to Genting Highlands by car, cross at Tuas, take the North-South Expressway (E2) to the Sungai Besi plaza, follow Middle Ring Road 2 round the east of KL to Gombak, then take the KL-Karak Highway (E8) to exit 803A at Genting Sempah. A private road climbs the last 17.6km. Add up the published markers and that is about 402km.
Park at SkyAvenue for the theme park. The resort's car parks are cashless, so load a Touch 'n Go card at home, because it also pays PLUS, Gombak and the RM5 charge that started on the hill road on 28 May 2026.
Past Sungai Besi is only about 63km, and Genting SkyWorlds puts the drive from KL at about an hour. Reach Genting Sempah in daylight and you can do the whole thing in one go. If a late start or a checkpoint queue puts you on the climb after dark, sleep in Melaka instead, which costs no more on PLUS.
Key takeaways
- Budget RM121.42 through Tuas or RM111.60 through Woodlands for the round trip: PLUS and Gombak both ways, the hill road charge once and Malaysia's RM20 road charge. Class 1, with PLUS read on 2 November 2026 and Gombak's rate dating from 2015.
- Keep balance on your Touch 'n Go card. The hill road's gantries have no top-up service, and unpaid charges can mean being refused the way out.
- Do not drive up as a convoy. The road's current rules bar it without the operator's written consent, and two vehicles are enough to count.
- Do not stop on the hill road for photos. Stopping is banned except in an emergency or to avoid an accident.
- SkyAvenue is the car park for Genting SkyWorlds. Bank cards work only at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, so use Touch 'n Go everywhere else.

The route from Singapore to Genting Highlands
The first 339km is the same drive as KL, and our Singapore to KL guide covers it stop by stop. Here is the whole run through Tuas.
| Stage | Road | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Tuas to Senai North | Second Link Expressway | 47km on PLUS's figure |
| Senai North to the Sungai Besi plaza | E2, KM18 to KM310 | 292km |
| Sungai Besi plaza to Sri Petaling | Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway (E37) | About 2km |
| Sri Petaling to Gombak | Middle Ring Road 2 (FT28) | About 25km |
| Gombak to exit 803A | KL-Karak Highway (E8) | About 19km |
| Exit 803A to the summit | Jalan Genting Highlands | 17.6km |
| Total | About 402km |
PLUS gives the first two rows, and the rest we worked out from Wikipedia's markers. Changi Recommends says 417km (13 June 2022), and Traveloka says 370km to 400km on an undated page, so treat ours as a close estimate. Woodlands joins the E2 at Pandan, KM0, which makes it about 373km plus the Eastern Dispersal Link. We would still use Tuas, for the reasons in our Woodlands or Tuas guide, unless you start in the north or east of the island.
How long the drive takes
TheSmartLocal and TripZilla put Singapore to KL at 4 to 5 hours, and Genting SkyWorlds says KL to the theme park takes about an hour, so we would plan on 5 to 6 hours of road time. That is longer than the 4 to 5 hours Changi Recommends gives for the whole trip without stops, and inside the 4.5 to 6 that Traveloka allows with a short one. The checkpoint comes on top of any of these figures: ICA says car travellers leaving at peak hours over the 2026 National Day weekend waited up to three hours, and it advises early mornings or late evenings.
Between the E2 and the Karak Highway
Leave the E2 at the Sungai Besi plaza, stay on the E37 for the Sri Petaling interchange, and take Middle Ring Road 2 towards Ampang. It meets the Karak Highway at the Gombak interchange. Wikipedia's table lists no toll plaza on this stretch of Middle Ring Road 2, and says the E37 stopped collecting in June 2018.
This is the stretch where KL's traffic finds you. Wikipedia names the lemang stalls opposite Zoo Negara as a bottleneck at peak hours, and the rush-hour figures are in our KL guide. Your map may offer another way through the city, which is fine, but check it for extra tolls.
On the Karak Highway
Pay at Gombak, go through the Genting Sempah tunnel, and look for exit 803A at about km 36.6. Wikipedia describes the highway as full of hairpin bends and says crashes, many of them fatal, have often happened on it. It lists the Genting Sempah rest area at km 38.3, which is past your exit going east, so take your last break before KL.
Tolls in ringgit and what pays them
All figures are for a Class 1 car. PLUS's are from its calculator on 2 November 2026, and the calculator gave the same fare both ways. LTA's were last updated on 28 May 2025.
| Charge | Through Tuas | Through Woodlands |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore toll, leaving | S$2.10 | S$0.80 |
| Singapore toll, coming home | S$2.10 | None |
| PLUS to Sungai Besi, one way | RM42.21 | RM37.30 |
| Gombak plaza, each time you pass | RM6 | RM6 |
| Hill road charge, on entry | RM5 | RM5 |
| Malaysia's road charge, per entry to the country | RM20 | RM20 |
| Ringgit total, there and back | RM121.42 | RM111.60 |
Two caveats on Gombak. The RM6 comes from ANIH's October 2015 revision and we found no later change, though we also found no current table from ANIH. And no report we read says whether it applies in both directions, so we counted it twice. The Bentong plaza does not apply, because exit 803A comes well before it.
The hill road charge
Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd (LCSB), which operates the road, began charging on 28 May 2026. A car pays RM5 per entry at either gantry: the Genting Highlands entry at Genting Sempah, or the Gohtong Jaya entry at the Gohtong Jaya roundabout. Malay Mail reported in March that it follows a user-pays principle, to fund maintenance and emergency response. Leaving and coming back up would count as a second entry, and LCSB's terms let it change the rate without notice.
Which card goes where
| Stop | Payment | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore checkpoint | Stored-value card such as a NETS Motoring Card or CEPAS card, with no top-up machine at the checkpoint | LTA |
| Malaysia's road charge | Touch 'n Go card or eWallet app | JPJ |
| PLUS plazas | Touch 'n Go card, SmartTAG or RFID | PLUS |
| Gombak | Touch 'n Go or SmartTAG, and debit or credit cards | Wikipedia; Carz, 3 January 2025 |
| Hill road gantries | Touch 'n Go, RFID, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, with no top-up service | LCSB terms |
LCSB's terms say non-payment can mean the car and its owner or driver are denied exit from the road. They do not mention foreign-registered cars, and we could not find the FAQ its advisory refers to, so we cannot say how a Singapore plate is treated in the licence plate recognition lanes. Those lanes are for registered users and other classes anyway. Tap a physical card and watch for it to clear.
The rules on the Genting hill road
This is not a public road. Jalan Genting Highlands and the roads linked to it belong to the Genting Malaysia group, and LCSB runs them under a set of Rules and Regulations, dated March 2026 and linked from the footer of Resorts World Genting's own site. What matters to a driver in a private car:
- You may not stop on the road, shoulder or verge except in an emergency or to avoid an accident, and the rules list photographs and drones among the reasons that do not count.
- You need LCSB's written consent to cycle or walk on it.
- Security staff can turn a car back without giving a reason, and they may ask for documents on its roadworthiness.
- Speed limits apply, as does Malaysia's Road Transport Act.
- The owner and LCSB can close the road at any time without notice.
Those rules also carry an emergency helpline. Save it before you start the climb.
What the road is like
Wikipedia gives 17.6km, a 50km/h limit and gradients of about 10% to 16%, with sharp bends and escape ramps on the way down. Part of it, the Chin Swee Bypass, splits into separate climbing and descending roads. Come down in a low gear and stay off the brakes.
After a crash involving a tour bus on 30 May 2026, in which early findings pointed to the brakes, Utusan Malaysia reported on 9 June that the tourism minister wanted speed humps studied, mainly on the downhill stretch. We found no report that any were built.
Can you drive up in a group?
Not as a convoy. Motorist's July 2020 article said convoys of cars and motorcycles were banned indefinitely, but that story rested on a video of an officer. Paul Tan reported at the time that no official statement had been issued, and SAYS said management refused to comment. We found no announcement since that the ban was lifted or confirmed.
The written position is firmer than the 2020 story. Paragraph 12 of the current rules bars street cruising without LCSB's prior written consent, and defines it as two or more vehicles gathering on the road where someone does any of a list of things. Driving in convoy is on that list, next to racing and loud stereos.
The rules do not say how close together counts, and we found no report of ordinary family groups being stopped, so we cannot tell you where the guards draw the line. Two cars of relatives who happen to climb together are a long way from a car club with stickers and a lead driver, but both can fall inside those words. Space out at Genting Sempah, drop the lead car and the stickers, and meet in the car park. An organised drive should write to LCSB first.
Fog and road closures
Fog is ordinary on this hill. A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman told Malay Mail in January 2018 that at night it can get thick even on normal days, while a police officer said it was not bad enough to be hazardous. We found no recent official warning and no figures on how often it happens.
Closures are better documented. On 19 December 2021 Resorts World Genting said the road from Genting Sempah to Gohtong Jaya was shut by landslides and sent drivers up the Batang Kali road. A year later it was the other way round: after the Batang Kali landslide in December 2022 it told guests to use Genting Sempah, and Wikipedia says the Batang Kali road did not reopen until 1 July 2024. A slide on the Ambar Court road in January 2025 left the main road alone, the resort said. Look at its site on the morning you leave, particularly after days of heavy rain.
Where to park at Resorts World Genting
The resort's car park page says bays are spread around the resort and gives no addresses or levels, so go by the signs and choose by where you are going.
| Going to | Park at | What is published |
|---|---|---|
| Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park | SkyAvenue | Follow signs to the SkyAvenue parking bay, then mall signs to the main entrance |
| Shops and restaurants at the top | SkyAvenue | Touch 'n Go only |
| Genting Highlands Premium Outlets | Its own car park | Public and premium bays, and the only one that takes Visa, Mastercard and MyDebit as well as Touch 'n Go |
| Awana SkyWay cable car | Awana SkyCentral or Premium Outlets | Awana station is on Level 4 of Sky Sentral, linked to the outlets by two bridges |
| A hotel at the resort | First World Hotel, Highlands Hotel, RW Hotel or Genting Grand | Each has a car park on the resort's list; valet is a paid service at Genting Grand, RW Hotel and Crockfords |
| Resorts World Awana | Resorts World Awana | On the resort's list |
How the car parks work
All of them are cashless. Tap at the reader going in and use the same card coming out. The first 15 minutes are free, and a lost entry card costs RM100. Rates in force since 1 January 2026 are on the page, and they rise on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Genting Rewards Platinum and Gold members park free.
The page says nothing about hotel guests or overnight stays, so ask your hotel before you book whether parking is included. EV chargers are at the hilltop opposite the Highlands Hotel.
Parking below and riding up
You can stop at the outlets and take the cable car for the last stretch, which is what the resort told drivers to do during the December 2021 closure. If the top is in fog when you arrive, this is the option we would look at first. Check that the cable car is running before you commit, and note that we found no published walking time from the car park to the station.
Is it worth breaking the drive overnight?
The extra distance past KL is small. The climb is what should decide it, because it is the part of the day you least want to do tired or in the dark. Work backwards from reaching Genting Sempah in daylight.
| Your day | What we would do |
|---|---|
| Clearing the checkpoint in the early morning | Drive straight through, with a break on the E2 |
| Leaving after lunch or after work | Stop overnight in Melaka and finish the next morning |
| Leaving at a holiday peak | Allow for ICA's three-hour wait, and stop if it eats your daylight |
| Already planning time in KL | Do KL first and go up from there |
Melaka
The Ayer Keroh exit at KM195.5 is about 225km from Tanjung Kupang, so about 177km remains for the next day, and PLUS's calculator charges nothing extra for the split: RM24.43 from BSI plus RM12.87 onward makes the same RM37.30, while from Tanjung Kupang the two legs come to RM42.13, or 8 sen less. This is the stop we would choose, because it divides the distance better and keeps you out of KL's rush hour on the first day. Our Melaka guide has the parking and tells you when the old town closes to cars.
KL
Stopping in KL leaves only about 63km and an easy morning, but you take on the city's traffic and parking at the end of your longest day. Do it if you want the city anyway, and read the parking section of the KL guide first.
Malaysia's RM20 is per entry to the country and the hill road's RM5 is per entry to that road, so you pay each of them once wherever you sleep.
Petrol and what to have ready at the checkpoint
A round trip of about 800km before any local driving means most cars will need petrol in Malaysia, on top of LTA's rule that you leave Singapore with at least three-quarters of a tank. A Singapore car may buy RON97 only, and our petrol guide has this week's price and the penalty for getting it wrong.
LTA says Malaysian officers may ask for a printed certificate of insurance and printed road tax validity, so print both and bring your licence. ICA recommends MyICA QR codes for faster clearance, and our QR guide has the steps. The rest is in the checklist for driving across, and the JB traffic guide covers when the queues build.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Singapore to Genting Highlands by car?
About 402km through Tuas, on PLUS's figures and Wikipedia's markers. Changi Recommends gave 417km in 2022. We would plan on 5 to 6 hours of road time, before any checkpoint queue.
Is there a toll to drive up to Genting Highlands?
Yes. Since 28 May 2026 a car pays RM5 per entry at the Genting Sempah or Gohtong Jaya gantry, by Touch 'n Go, RFID or a Mastercard or Visa card. The operator calls it a private road charge, and there is no top-up service at the gantry.
How much are the tolls from Singapore to Genting?
For a Class 1 car, the ringgit total there and back is RM121.42 through Tuas or RM111.60 through Woodlands, and that covers Malaysia's RM20 road charge. It counts Gombak at RM6 each way, a 2015 rate. Singapore's toll is extra, at S$2.10 each way at Tuas or S$0.80 going out at Woodlands.
Are convoys still banned on the Genting Highlands road?
Yes, in writing. The road's current rules bar driving in convoy, as a form of street cruising, without the operator's prior written consent, and two vehicles are enough to count. The 2020 reports came with no official statement, and we found nothing since saying it was lifted.
Where should I park at Genting Highlands?
SkyAvenue for Genting SkyWorlds and the shops at the top, your hotel's car park if you are staying, and Genting Highlands Premium Outlets for the outlets or the cable car. All are cashless, and only Premium Outlets takes bank cards.
Should I break the drive to Genting overnight?
Only if you would otherwise reach the hill road tired or after dark. Melaka is the natural stop at about 225km, and PLUS's calculator charges no more for leaving and rejoining there.
