Which JB hotel to book by car: area, checkpoint and parking
Written and reviewed by the Radiant VEP Solutions team.
Fourteen JB hotels compared for a Singapore driver: which area suits the trip, which checkpoint is closer and what each hotel states about guest parking. Covers JB city, Taman Abad, Permas Jaya, Skudai and Iskandar Puteri, and why Thistle has dropped off the list.
In this article
The JB hotel to book depends on the trip, and the area decides most of it. For a night of food and malls, stay in JB city and go through Woodlands, because the Malaysian checkpoint is in the city. For Legoland or Puteri Harbour, stay in Iskandar Puteri and go through Tuas. For a weekend inside one mall, look at KSL in Taman Abad, the Sheraton at SKS City Mall or Hyatt Place at Paradigm Mall.
Read the parking terms before you pay. Of the 14 hotels in our table, six state free self-parking for guests. The rest charge, fold it into a resort fee, contradict themselves or say nothing we could find. The table gives the wording for each one, grouped by area, and the order carries no ranking.
Key takeaways
- Woodlands is the closer crossing for the nine hotels in JB city, Taman Abad and Permas Jaya. Tuas suits the four in Iskandar Puteri, and Hyatt Place in Skudai can go either way.
- Capri by Fraser, DoubleTree, Holiday Inn City Centre, Holiday Inn Express, the Sheraton and Fraser Place all state free self-parking for guests.
- Four of the hotels share a car park with a mall, so ask the front desk how the free or guest rate works at the exit gantry.
- Thistle Johor Bahru closed on 30 September 2025, and the JW Marriott replacing it was due on 1 December 2026, so skip any list that still sends you there.
- Malaysia adds a tourism tax of RM10 per room per night for foreign guests, and one night away gets you up to S$100 of GST relief coming home, against S$500 for two nights.

JB hotels compared for a driver
Parking wording comes from each hotel's own pages as we could read them on 2 November 2026, except where a report is named. We left out room rates and parking rates because they change. Drive times are the hotel's own and assume clear roads.

How we got the closer checkpoint
Woodlands puts you on the Causeway and into Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI), in the middle of Johor Bahru. Tuas puts you on the Second Link and into the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) in western Johor, on the same side as Iskandar Puteri. Fraser Place publishes the gap for that side of Johor: 20 minutes to Tuas and 40 to Woodlands. Where a hotel gives no figure, we went by which side of JB it is on. Our Woodlands or Tuas guide has the full comparison. None of this accounts for the queue, so the cameras on the morning can still change your answer.
Which area suits which trip
JB city, for one night of food and malls
BSI is in the city, so this is the shortest drive after the checkpoint, and most of what you came for is close enough to walk. Amari says it is within walking distance of the checkpoint and lists JB Sentral at 0.55km. Capri by Fraser and Holiday Inn Express run free shuttles to the checkpoint, and Holiday Inn Express wants its shuttle booked an hour ahead. Capri puts its apartments at Bukit Chagar, with City Square, Komtar JBCC and R&F Mall nearby. The Sheraton opened in October 2025, says TheSmartLocal, and YouTrip describes direct access from the hotel to SKS City Mall in Bukit Senyum.
Taman Abad, for a weekend at KSL
YouTrip describes KSL Hotel and Resort as sitting above KSL City Mall, with a waterpark and more than 500 shops, and its May 2026 guide warns that the mall is busy at weekends with a layout like a maze. Novotel opened opposite the mall in December 2025, a 4-minute walk by TheSmartLocal's count. Accor lists a family room that sleeps four and puts Legoland about 20 minutes' drive away, so this one can cover both ends of a family weekend.
Permas Jaya, for the eastern side
The Renaissance is at Bandar Baru Permas Jaya, and Marriott lists a stay and golf package there. We would save it for plans on the east of JB, since JB city is the shorter answer for a one-night food trip.
Skudai, for one mall
Hyatt Place is attached to Paradigm Mall. Its 2023 opening release gives 20 minutes from Tuas and 25 from Woodlands, which leaves out the queue, so pick by the side of Singapore you start from and the cameras that morning.
Iskandar Puteri, for Legoland and Puteri Harbour
Legoland Hotel is inside the resort, a couple of steps from the Theme Park, Water Park and SEA LIFE. Legoland's route through Tuas runs to Iskandar Puteri Exit 312, where its signs take over. Fraser Place and JEN are at Puteri Harbour, and Somerset Medini suits a bigger group that wants to cook, with apartments of up to three bedrooms. Look at the Tuas cameras before you leave. ICA said on 26 August 2026 that parts of the departure car zones there would close in phases, with works expected to run until late 2027 (The Straits Times, republished by The Star).
Danga Bay, the gap in our table
We found no hotel's own page or named report confirming an operating hotel at Danga Bay, so it has no row. TheSmartLocal does say Danga Bay is near the Sheraton, which is the closest we can get you.
Names we took out
Mothership reported that Thistle Johor Bahru on Jalan Sungai Chat ceased operations on 30 September 2025, and YTL Hotels bought it. The Edge and the New Straits Times report that YTL is converting it into the 410-key JW Marriott Hotel Johor Bahru, due on 1 December 2026. That date has not arrived as we write and we have read no parking terms for it, so it has no row either. Grand Paragon in Taman Century turns up on older lists too, but we could not find its own site and the booking listings disagree on its parking.
What to check about hotel parking
Car parks shared with a mall
Four hotels in the table park you in a mall's car park or share one:
- Holiday Inn City Centre: enter the Komtar JBCC car park from Jalan Wong Ah Fook and drive up to Level 7. Its drop-off point is reached from Jalan Tun Abdul Razak.
- The Sheraton: Marriott says the hotel shares its parking with SKS mall.
- Hyatt Place: Level 6 connects to the hotel lift, and event visitors and restaurant customers use the same floor. Valet is run by the mall at an extra charge.
- KSL: YouTrip says the hotel and mall have one car park, not two.
A mall's car park next to some other hotel is a different matter, because it may not hold your car overnight. YouTrip's September 2026 guide says City Square has no overnight parking at all, so stay with the car park your hotel names.
What to ask before you book
- Is parking free for every night of the stay? Most of the pages we read do not say either way.
- Can the car go in and out? DoubleTree and Holiday Inn Express state in and out privileges, and Somerset Medini says its stay charge covers multiple entries.
- How does the guest rate work at the gantry? We found no hotel page that explains it, so ask whether you need a stamp or a code from the front desk.
- What is the height limit? We found none on the hotel pages we read, and it matters for a tall MPV or a car with a roof box.
- Do you need a charger? DoubleTree and Fraser Place list EV charging on site, and Hyatt Place lists stations on the ground floor, run by the mall.
None of the hotel pages we read says what its gantry takes, so keep a Touch 'n Go card and a bank card in the car.
What the crossing needs
LTA wants the tank at least three-quarters full leaving Singapore, a stored-value card for the checkpoint toll, printed copies of your insurance certificate and road tax validity, and a valid driving licence. ICA's MyICA app gives you an individual or group QR code to generate before you reach the checkpoint, and you still carry the passports. MFA says a Singapore passport must be valid for more than 6 months at entry, and holders are exempt from the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, while other foreign nationals in the car must complete it. Our QR code guide covers the steps.
On the Malaysian side, JPJ charges foreign private cars a road charge of RM20 per entry, paid by Touch 'n Go card or eWallet. PLUS takes the Touch 'n Go card and SmartTAG on its expressways, which matters if you are staying in Iskandar Puteri. The Causeway checklist has both sides of the border in one table.
ICA's advice is to consider non-peak hours, such as early mornings and late evenings, and to check traffic before you set off. A hotel booking makes that easier than a day trip does, since you can cross late and come home early. Our JB traffic guide has more on timing.
Tourism tax and coming home
Tourism tax at the hotel
Malaysia charges foreign guests a tourism tax of RM10 per room per night. Royal Malaysian Customs says the hotel collects it at check-out, and its March 2025 guide says online booking platforms registered for the tax charge the same rate. Malaysian citizens and permanent residents are exempt, so a Singapore passport pays. Two rooms for two nights is RM40. Check your booking confirmation to see if it has been collected already.
GST relief depends on the nights
Singapore Customs gives no duty-free concession to travellers arriving from Malaysia. GST relief on new goods is up to S$100 if you were away for less than 2 days, or up to S$500 for 2 days or more. It counts from your departure day to the day before you return, and the clock time does not matter. So one night away counts as one day and gets S$100, and two nights count as two days and get S$500. If you plan a big shop, that second night moves your limit.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best hotel in JB?
It depends on the trip, so we have not ranked them. For one night of food and malls, look at JB city, and for Legoland, look at Iskandar Puteri. Then pick by the parking terms in the table.
Which JB hotel is near the Woodlands checkpoint?
Amari Johor Bahru says it is within walking distance of the checkpoint, and Capri by Fraser says minutes from the customs complex. Hilton says DoubleTree is just off the Causeway.
Do JB hotels have free parking for guests?
Six of the 14 in our table state it: Capri by Fraser, DoubleTree, Holiday Inn City Centre, Holiday Inn Express, the Sheraton and Fraser Place. Legoland Hotel includes parking in its Resort Fee, and Somerset Medini charges per stay.
Is Thistle Johor Bahru still open?
No. Mothership reported that it ceased operations on 30 September 2025. YTL is converting it into the JW Marriott Hotel Johor Bahru, due on 1 December 2026.
Which checkpoint should I use for a hotel in Iskandar Puteri?
Usually Tuas. Fraser Place puts Puteri Harbour 20 minutes from Tuas and 40 from Woodlands. Check the Tuas cameras first, because parts of its departure car zones are closing in phases until late 2027.
Do Singaporeans pay tourism tax at a Johor Bahru hotel?
Yes. Royal Malaysian Customs fixes it at RM10 per room per night, and only Malaysian citizens and permanent residents are exempt. The hotel collects it at check-out unless a registered booking platform has already charged it.
