The drive to Cameron Highlands from Singapore runs up the North-South Expressway to one of two exits, Tapah (Exit 132) or Simpang Pulai (Exit 137), then climbs a federal hill road. Cross at Woodlands or Tuas, whichever suits your start and the morning's queue.
Split it over two days if you can. Motorist and TheSmartLocal put the whole drive at about 7 to 9 hours depending on the road, and ICA reported waits of up to three hours at peak over the 2026 National Day weekend. We would do the expressway on day one, sleep in Melaka or Ipoh, and start the climb the next morning.
Go up by Simpang Pulai unless it is closed or you are staying in Ringlet or Tanah Rata. BOH Tea describes it as newer, wider and less winding than the Tapah road, which Tourism Malaysia calls narrow with a lot of sharp bends. Both have had landslides since 2024, so check the notices first.
Key takeaways
- A Class 1 car pays RM60.92 from BSI to Simpang Pulai and RM56.49 to Tapah on PLUS's calculator, read 2 November 2026. Tuas adds about RM5 each way.
- Breaking the drive at Ayer Keroh costs nothing extra in PLUS tolls, and an overnight at Ipoh adds RM2.79.
- Start the climb in daylight. An NGO president told The Star that Simpang Pulai to Blue Valley is quite dark from 7pm to 7am.
- Check for closures on the day. Simpang Pulai was shut from 25 October to 19 December 2024, and a slide blocked half the Tapah road on 17 July 2026.
- Fill up at R&R Tapah, and avoid Malaysian long weekends if you can. Sin Chew reported trips of under 20 minutes taking up to four hours in June 2026.

The route from Singapore to Cameron Highlands
Both crossings feed the same expressway. From Woodlands you clear Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and carry on past Kempas. From Tuas you clear the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex, take the Second Link Expressway from Tanjung Kupang and join at Senai Utara. After that you stay on the North-South Expressway until your exit. The fares below are one way for a Class 1 car, from PLUS's calculator on 2 November 2026.
| What changes | Woodlands | Tuas |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore toll, LTA | S$0.80 leaving, nothing coming back | S$2.10 each way |
| First Malaysian plaza on PLUS's list | BSI | Tanjung Kupang |
| PLUS fare to Tapah | RM56.49 | RM61.40 |
| PLUS fare to Simpang Pulai | RM60.92 | RM65.75 |
| Watch for | The peak queues ICA warns about | The same queues, plus departure car zones closing in phases until late 2027 (The Star, 26 August 2026) |
Woodlands costs less on both sides of the border. Tuas suits a start in the west of Singapore. Check LTA's traffic cameras before you leave, read the time stamped on the picture, and use our Woodlands or Tuas guide for the full comparison.
Published drive times
| Stretch | By Simpang Pulai | By Tapah | Who says so |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore to the highlands | About 7 hours 35 minutes | About 8.2 hours | Motorist, updated 3 November 2024 |
| Singapore to the highlands | About 7 hours | About 9 hours | TheSmartLocal, updated 27 June 2023 |
| Exit to the highlands only | 1.5 to 2 hours, about 80km | 1.5 to 2 hours, about 60km | BOH Tea, undated |
Treat these as road time and add the checkpoint. ICA said car travellers leaving at peak hours over the 2026 National Day weekend waited up to three hours for immigration clearance, and it advises early mornings and late evenings. We found no official figure for the total distance, so this guide leaves it out. Your map will give you one once you enter the hotel.
What to have ready
LTA wants at least three-quarters of a tank when you leave Singapore and a valid driving licence with you, and it says Malaysian officers may ask for printed copies of your insurance certificate and road tax validity. Neither checkpoint has a top-up machine, so load your stored-value card at home. Our checklist for driving across has the rest, the QR clearance guide covers the booth, and the JB traffic guide covers when queues build.
Splitting the drive over two days
We would split it. The expressway is long enough on its own, and the climb is the part you want to drive fresh and in daylight. Stopping costs nothing extra in tolls either. PLUS's fare from BSI to Ayer Keroh plus its fare from Ayer Keroh to Simpang Pulai comes to RM60.92, the same as paying straight through.
| Overnight exit | BSI to there | There to Tapah | There to Simpang Pulai | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ayer Keroh, Melaka | RM24.43 | RM32.06 | RM36.49 | You crossed in the evening after work |
| Seremban | RM32.05 | RM24.44 | RM28.86 | You want a shorter second day and no city stop |
| Ipoh Selatan | RM62.23 | RM5.90 | RM1.48 | You crossed early and want only the climb left |
Ipoh is the one we would pick after an early crossing, because Simpang Pulai is the exit before Ipoh Selatan on PLUS's list. Overshooting to sleep there and coming back adds RM2.79. For Tapah, a night in Melaka or Seremban makes more sense.
If you must do it in one day
Cross before the morning peak and work out from your map when you must leave R&R Tapah to finish the hill road in daylight. If you miss that, sleep near the expressway and go up the next morning.
Tolls on the way to Cameron Highlands
PLUS's calculator gave the same fare in both directions when we ran these on 2 November 2026. The hill roads are federal routes past the exit plazas, so the fares end there. The road charge is JPJ's figure, per entry.
| Route | PLUS, one way | PLUS, both ways | Road charge | Total in RM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woodlands and Tapah | RM56.49 | RM112.98 | RM20 | RM132.98 |
| Woodlands and Simpang Pulai | RM60.92 | RM121.84 | RM20 | RM141.84 |
| Tuas and Tapah | RM61.40 | RM122.80 | RM20 | RM142.80 |
| Tuas and Simpang Pulai | RM65.75 | RM131.50 | RM20 | RM151.50 |
Add the Singapore toll from the first table in Singapore dollars. Pay the Malaysian tolls with Touch 'n Go, and load enough for the way home before you start, because a stop at a reload kiosk is one more queue. JPJ says the road charge can come from a Touch 'n Go card or the eWallet app. PLUS lists reload kiosks at R&R Tapah, and self-service kiosks at the Machap, Pagoh, Ayer Keroh and Rawang R&Rs.
Where to break the drive on the North-South Expressway
These stops run in order going north. PLUS's list covers its Touch 'n Go kiosk sites, so it may not name every rest area, and the Seremban stop comes from PLUS's own suggestion for northbound drivers as reported by Paul Tan.
| Stop | What is confirmed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| R&R Machap | Northbound R&R with a self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| R&R Pagoh | Northbound R&R with a self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| R&R Ayer Keroh | Northbound R&R with a self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| R&R Seremban | One of the alternatives PLUS names while Pedas Linggi is shut | Paul Tan, 2 March 2026 |
| R&R Rawang | Northbound R&R with a self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| R&R Tapah | KM331.8 northbound, with Petronas and Shell, food court, ATM, surau, toilets and EV charging | PLUS |
Do not plan on Pedas Linggi. Paul Tan reported on 2 March 2026 that the northbound R&R at KM225.5 was closing for about 18 months of refurbishment, with PLUS expecting it back by the end of 2027.
Fill up at R&R Tapah, whichever road you take. Northbound drivers reach it before the Tapah exit, and it is the last station we could confirm before the climb. Our petrol guide has the rule on which grade a Singapore car may pump, this week's price and the penalties.
Tapah or Simpang Pulai: the two roads up
| What you get | Simpang Pulai, FT185 | Tapah, FT59 |
|---|---|---|
| Exit | 137 | 132 |
| Road, per BOH Tea | Newer, wider, less winding. About 80km | The oldest route, with winding roads. About 60km |
| Standard, per Wikipedia's road notes | JKR R3, two-lane, 50 km/h design speed | Narrow JKR R3 mountain stretches marked 40 km/h |
| Tourism Malaysia's view | The newer road | Narrow, with a lot of sharp bends |
| Where you arrive first | Kampung Raja at the north end, then Brinchang, then Tanah Rata | Ringlet, then Tanah Rata, then Brinchang |
Which one we would take
Simpang Pulai, for most cars. It suits a family, anyone who gets carsick and anyone new to hill roads. BOH suggests it for motion sickness, and Motorist and TheSmartLocal both time it as the quicker drive even though it is longer. One local information site, cameron.com.my, calls Tapah the faster road, so the sources do not all agree.
Tapah makes sense for a bed in Ringlet or Tanah Rata, because you avoid crawling through Kea Farm and Brinchang to reach it, and it is the road with the waterfall. It is also the road JKR sends you to when Simpang Pulai shuts. The Star reported in November 2024 that heavy vehicles using it during that closure put lighter cars at risk on its narrow bends.
Going up by one road and home by the other works when the notices are clear, because PLUS's fare between the two exits is only RM4.59.
Landslide and closure notices
On 2 November 2026 we found no closure notice in force on either road, though these notices are posted locally and go out of date quickly, so read the table as the record and not as today's status.
| Date | Road | What happened | Reported by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 October to 19 December 2024 | FT185 | A landslide at KM43.4 shut the road both ways until JKR had cleared it, with drivers sent to Tapah | JKR Perak, via Paul Tan; The Star |
| 6 January 2025 | FT185 at Kampung Raja | A landslide near the Blue Valley junction blocked both directions, with drivers sent to Tapah or Sungai Koyan | Bikes Republic, citing the district disaster secretariat |
| 25 December 2025 | FT185, section 45.9 | Roadside eatery closed for a month over landslide risk on its slope, outside JKR's reserve | Malay Mail |
| 3 to 20 June 2026 | FT185 | One lane closed for partial reconstruction, with congestion expected at peak hours | Ipoh Echo, 2 June 2026 |
| 17 July 2026 | FT59 near Batu 25 | Trees and rocks came down in heavy rain and blocked half the road, about 7km from Ringlet | Bernama; NADMA |
JKR Perak and its Kinta district office issued the 2024 notices, so look at their latest posts and the Malaysian news on the day you travel, and ask your hotel which road is open if it has been raining. Make the call at R&R Tapah, since the Tapah exit comes before Simpang Pulai.
Driving the hill road
Motorist's advice for steep descents is to drop a gear and let the engine do part of the braking: second or third in a manual, and the 3, 2 or L positions or paddle shifters in an automatic. Lean on the pedal all the way down and the brakes can overheat and fade. We would stop and let them cool if the pedal goes soft or you smell burning.
- Plan to drive it in daylight, because the president of the NGO REACH told The Star in November 2024 that the stretch between Blue Valley and Simpang Pulai is dimly lit and quite dark from 7pm to 7am.
- Expect lorries on both roads, since Sin Chew reported in June 2026 that vegetable lorries took up to seven hours during a holiday jam that stretched from the Simpang Pulai and Tapah climbs into the highlands.
- Keep your speed down on FT185 as well. Ipoh Echo reported in June 2026 that the route has long been recognised as an accident risk because of the condition of the road, and JKR was rebuilding part of it that month.
- Use low beams in fog and rain, and leave more room than you would on the expressway.
Traffic once you are up there
The jam inside the highlands can cost more time than the climb. New Straits Times, citing Sinar Harian in August 2024, said the seven kilometres from Tanah Rata through Brinchang to Kea Farm usually take 20 minutes and can take nearly three hours in the holidays. Over a long weekend in June 2026, Sin Chew reported trips of under 20 minutes taking up to four hours, with Simpang Pulai traffic building from 7am.
Roadworks are part of this for now. The Works Minister told the Dewan Negara, as carried by Paul Tan on 5 March 2026, that FT59 is being widened from two lanes to four for one kilometre in Brinchang, with a one-way system at Kea Farm, 38% complete and due by February 2028.
Avoid Malaysian long weekends and school holidays if your dates allow. Pick a base near what you came for, and walk or leave the car parked on the busiest afternoons. Tanah Rata has the district council's offices and the hospital, Wikipedia's road notes say, and Brinchang has the market.
What to do in Cameron Highlands
Tourism Malaysia gives the climate as 15 to 25 degrees Celsius all year and describes the attractions as mostly markets, farms and nurseries, while TheSmartLocal names February, April, July and August as the drier months and suggests a fleece and a rain jacket. The list below is in no particular order. TheSmartLocal's article is dated 11 July 2025 and we did not find those venues' own sites, so call ahead.
| Place | What you do there | Source |
|---|---|---|
| BOH Sungei Palas Tea Garden, Brinchang | Tea factory tour, cafe and the view over the fields. Check the days it opens on BOH's site | BOH Tea; Tourism Malaysia |
| BOH Tea Garden, Ringlet | BOH's other garden for visitors, on the Tapah side of the highlands | BOH Tea |
| Lata Iskandar | Waterfall beside FT59, with roadside fruit and souvenir stalls | TheSmartLocal |
| Brinchang Night Market | Street food and produce from nearby farms | TheSmartLocal |
| Agro Market, Brinchang | A sheltered flower park that still works on a wet day | TheSmartLocal |
| Cactus Valley, Brinchang | Walkways lined with cacti, laid out like a maze | TheSmartLocal |
| Sam Poh Temple, above Brinchang | A Buddhist temple mixing Thai and Chinese styles | TheSmartLocal |
| The Sheep Sanctuary, Kea Farm | Feeding and walking with a small flock, which suits children | TheSmartLocal |
Strawberry picking is on Tourism Malaysia's list as well, with tea and scones. Sin Chew reported in June 2026 that the rainy season had hurt the crop and holiday crowds caused shortages, so do not plan a whole day around it.
Parking when you get there
BOH is the one place here that publishes anything useful. Its visitor article gives about 190 car bays at the foot of the hill at Sungei Palas, near the stairs to the tea centre, and says the guards there will let elderly or less mobile passengers be dropped at the entrance before you go back down to park. TheSmartLocal says drivers at Lata Iskandar park on the shoulder of FT59, so pull fully clear of the lane and watch your passengers. For everywhere else, ask your hotel.
A five-day plan by car
- Day one: cross early, drive the expressway and sleep near Simpang Pulai or in Melaka.
- Day two: fill up, go up in the morning and check in. Keep the afternoon short and leave the car parked.
- Day three: BOH in the morning, then Brinchang. Stay for the market if it is running.
- Day four: Cactus Valley, the Agro Market if it is wet, or the Ringlet side if you are staying at that end.
- Day five: check the notices, start down early enough to finish the hill road in daylight, and drive home or stop again in Melaka.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Singapore to Cameron Highlands?
Motorist gives about 7 hours 35 minutes by Simpang Pulai and about 8.2 hours by Tapah, and TheSmartLocal gives about 7 and 9 hours. Add the checkpoint, where ICA reported waits of up to three hours at peak over the 2026 National Day weekend.
Which is better, Tapah or Simpang Pulai?
Simpang Pulai for most drivers, since BOH Tea describes it as newer, wider and less winding. Tapah suits a stay in Ringlet or Tanah Rata, and it is the road JKR points to when Simpang Pulai closes.
How much are the tolls from Singapore to Cameron Highlands?
PLUS's calculator gave a Class 1 car RM56.49 from BSI to Tapah and RM60.92 to Simpang Pulai on 2 November 2026. From Tanjung Kupang it gave RM61.40 and RM65.75. Add Malaysia's RM20 road charge per entry and the Singapore toll.
Should I split the drive to Cameron Highlands?
We would, so that you start the climb rested and in daylight. Melaka and Ipoh both work, and breaking the journey at Ayer Keroh costs nothing extra in PLUS tolls.
Is the Simpang Pulai road safe at night?
We would not drive it in the dark. An NGO president told The Star in November 2024 that the stretch from Blue Valley to Simpang Pulai is quite dark from 7pm to 7am, and Ipoh Echo reported in June 2026 that the route has long been recognised as an accident risk.
Is the road to Cameron Highlands open today?
We found no closure notice in force on 2 November 2026, but slides are frequent and notices go up locally. Check JKR Perak, JKR Kinta and the news on the day, and ask your hotel if it has been raining.
Where is the last petrol stop before the climb?
R&R Tapah is the last one we could confirm, with Petronas and Shell at KM331.8 northbound on PLUS's list. You reach it before the Tapah exit, so it works for either road.
