Things to do in Ipoh from Singapore: the drive, tolls and parking
Written and reviewed by the Radiant VEP Solutions team.
Four days in Ipoh in your own car: the North-South Expressway, PLUS tolls in ringgit, where to break the drive, how parking works in the old town, then the lanes, cave temples, Kellie's Castle and what to eat once you are there.

The things to do in Ipoh split into two days. One is on foot in the old town: Concubine Lane, Kong Heng Square, the murals and the Hakka tin-mining museum. The other is by car: the cave temples, Tasik Cermin and Kellie's Castle. From Singapore, add a day on the road each way and plan on four days and three nights.
The drive to Ipoh is the North-South Expressway almost the whole way. PLUS's calculator gave a Class 1 car RM62.23 one way from BSI to Ipoh Selatan on 2 November 2026. TheSmartLocal put the trip at roughly 8 hours in March 2026, and ICA said in August that cars leaving at peak had waited up to three hours at the checkpoint. So cross early and stop properly somewhere. Getting off at Ayer Keroh or Seremban for a meal adds nothing to the fare.
Sort out parking before you arrive. The old town is short of bays at weekends, the new car park has not been built, and council parking is paid by app. We found nothing saying that app takes a Singapore plate.
Key takeaways
- Give it four days: one to drive up, the old town on foot, the caves and Kellie's Castle by car, then Gopeng on the way home.
- A Class 1 car pays RM62.23 from BSI to Ipoh Selatan and RM67.14 from Tanjung Kupang on PLUS's calculator, read 2 November 2026. Add Malaysia's RM20 road charge per entry.
- Leaving the expressway at Ayer Keroh or Seremban and rejoining costs nothing extra in PLUS tolls. Tapah adds RM0.16.
- Email park@perak.gov.my before you go. Park@Perak's site asks for an identity card number to register, and nobody we could find says whether it accepts a Singapore plate.
- A Singapore car may only pump RON97. R&R Tapah has Petronas and Shell on the northbound side.

How many days to give Ipoh
We would give it four days and three nights from Singapore. Ipoh does not need a week, but the road takes a full day each way once you count the checkpoint, and you want one day walking and one day driving. A visitor from Kuala Lumpur told The Star in May 2026 that she planned two nights. You are coming from a lot further away, so add one.
| Day | Where | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| One | Singapore to Ipoh | Cross early, take a long stop at Ayer Keroh or Seremban, fill up at Tapah, check in |
| Two | Old town, on foot | Leave the car in one bay. Concubine Lane, Kong Heng Square, the murals, Han Chin Pet Soo, the railway station end of the heritage trail |
| Three | Around Ipoh, by car | Tasik Cermin in the morning for the reflections, then the Gunung Rapat cave temples, Perak Tong or Kellie's Castle. Gerbang Malam after dark |
| Four | Gopeng, then home | Muzium Gopeng or HOGA Gaharu Tea Valley off the Gopeng exit, then south |
If you have a fifth day
Spend it on Lost World of Tambun if you have children, Gua Tempurung if you like caves, or Cameron Highlands, whose exit sits right next to Ipoh's on the expressway.
Singapore to Ipoh by car: the route
Cross at either checkpoint, get onto the North-South Expressway and stay on it. Tourism Perak lists four ways into the city, and the right one depends on your hotel, so put the address in your map before you set off.
- Exit 137, Simpang Pulai
- Exit 139, Ipoh Selatan
- Exit 140, Ipoh Utara, which Tourism Malaysia names for Perak Tong
- Exit 141, Jelapang
The fares below are one way for a Class 1 car, read from PLUS's calculator on 2 November 2026. LTA's Singapore tolls are for cars.
| What changes | Woodlands | Tuas |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore toll, LTA | S$0.80 leaving, nothing coming back | S$2.10 each way |
| Plaza PLUS's fare starts from | Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) | Tanjung Kupang |
| To Gopeng | RM59.85 | RM64.76 |
| To Simpang Pulai | RM60.92 | RM65.75 |
| To Ipoh Selatan | RM62.23 | RM67.14 |
Woodlands is about RM5 cheaper on PLUS and cheaper on the Singapore side too. Our Woodlands or Tuas guide has the rest of the comparison, and the JB traffic guide covers when the queues build.
Published drive times
| Stretch | Time | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore to Ipoh | Roughly 8 hours, which looks high: the same article gives Penang, further north, 7.5 hours | TheSmartLocal, 5 March 2026 |
| Checkpoint at peak, cars leaving | Up to three hours | ICA, 31 August 2026 |
| Kuala Lumpur to Meru, Ipoh | About 2 hours 20 minutes | Tourism Malaysia, undated |
ICA advises early mornings and late evenings. We found no official figure for the distance, and the route planners disagree by more than 100km, so this guide leaves it out.
What to have ready
LTA wants at least three-quarters of a tank when you leave Singapore. It also says Malaysian officers may ask for printed copies of your insurance certificate and road tax validity. There are no top-up machines at the checkpoints, so load your stored-value card at home. The rest is in our checklist for driving across, and ICA asks travellers to use MyICA QR codes at immigration, which the QR clearance guide walks through.
Tolls to Ipoh in ringgit
PLUS's calculator gave the same fare in both directions for the pairs we checked. Malaysia's road charge is JPJ's figure, per entry.
| Route | PLUS, one way | PLUS, both ways | Road charge | Total in RM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woodlands and Simpang Pulai | RM60.92 | RM121.84 | RM20 | RM141.84 |
| Woodlands and Ipoh Selatan | RM62.23 | RM124.46 | RM20 | RM144.46 |
| Tuas and Simpang Pulai | RM65.75 | RM131.50 | RM20 | RM151.50 |
| Tuas and Ipoh Selatan | RM67.14 | RM134.28 | RM20 | RM154.28 |
Add the Singapore toll in Singapore dollars. We have left out Ipoh Utara and Jelapang. On the day we checked, the calculator showed RM0.00 to Ipoh Utara from both BSI and Tanjung Kupang, and its Jelapang figure from BSI did not add up against the fare through Ipoh Selatan. If you plan to use either exit, run it yourself on the day.
Pay Malaysian tolls with Touch 'n Go. JPJ says the road charge can come from a Touch 'n Go card or the eWallet app. Load enough for the way home too. PLUS lists a reload kiosk at R&R Tapah and self-service kiosks at the northbound Machap, Pagoh, Ayer Keroh and Rawang stops.
Where to break the drive
Stop twice if you can, and make one of them a real meal. The table adds PLUS's fare to each exit to its fare from there on to Ipoh Selatan, so you can see what leaving the expressway and rejoining would cost.
| Get off at | BSI to there | There to Ipoh Selatan | Extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pagoh | RM18.52 | RM43.87 | RM0.16 |
| Ayer Keroh, for Melaka | RM24.43 | RM37.80 | Nothing |
| Seremban | RM32.05 | RM30.18 | Nothing |
| Rawang | RM43.53 | RM19.02 | RM0.32 |
| Tanjung Malim | RM48.37 | RM14.35 | RM0.49 |
| Tapah | RM56.49 | RM5.90 | RM0.16 |
Ayer Keroh or Seremban is where we would take the long stop, since neither adds a sen. If you crossed late, sleep in Melaka and do the rest the next morning.
Northbound rest stops we could confirm
| Stop | What is confirmed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| R&R Machap | Self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| Yong Peng | Surau, toilets and nappy room | PLUS |
| R&R Pagoh | Self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| Tangkak | Toilets | PLUS |
| R&R Ayer Keroh | Self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| R&R Seremban | Named by PLUS as an alternative to Pedas Linggi | Paul Tan, 2 March 2026 |
| R&R Rawang | Self-service Touch 'n Go kiosk | PLUS |
| Tanjong Malim | Shell and toilets | PLUS |
| R&R Tapah | Petronas and Shell, food court, ATM, surau, toilets, EV charging, reload kiosk | PLUS |
PLUS's lists are not a full register of every rest area, so you will pass others. Do not plan on Pedas Linggi. Paul Tan reported in March 2026 that the northbound R&R was closing for about 18 months of refurbishment, with PLUS expecting it back by the end of 2027.
Fill up at Tapah if you have not already. A Singapore car may only buy RON97 in Malaysia, and since April 2026 the driver or owner can be charged over RON95 as well as the station. Our petrol guide has the rule, this week's price and the penalties.
Parking in Ipoh old town
Plan for this part, because it is the weak spot of the trip. A trader told The Star in January 2023 that parking is very hard to find around the old town and that the area is constantly congested, especially at weekends. A visitor to Ipoh told the same paper in May 2026 that her husband dropped the family off first and then went looking for a bay. On a weekend, do the same, and get there early.
How you pay
Ipoh City Council (MBI) moved parking from meters to coupons and then to its Park@Perak app. Here is what the sources say, and where they part ways.
- Park@Perak's own site says you register with an identity card number, then top up by card, online banking or eWallet. We found nothing saying it accepts a Singapore plate, a passport or a foreign number. Ask at park@perak.gov.my before you go, or ask your hotel.
- Ipoh Hyperlocal reported in July 2024 that Park@Perak had partnered with Flexi Parking and the Touch 'n Go eWallet, so drivers can pay through those apps as well. It does not cover foreign cars either.
- That same report says paper coupons are no longer used in Ipoh, in line with the end-2023 date MBI gave Ipoh Echo. Park@Perak's site still says they can be used. Do not count on finding any.
Park@Perak's terms say to park only in coupon bays and to keep to the council's operating period. MBI collected RM9 million in parking compounds the year before, Ipoh Echo reported in May 2026, so paying is worth the trouble.
What it costs
We could not find a council page with a current old town tariff or its paid hours. The nearest official figures came from the then mayor in The Star in November 2022, for the Perak UTC and Amanjaya chicken market car parks: RM0.60 an hour, RM4 for the day and RM2 overnight from 6pm to 6am. Those two use plate recognition, with a QR code to pay through Flexi Parking if you have no Park@Perak account. Treat the figures as a guide, since they are dated and neither is in the old town.
Where the bays are
| Place | Status | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Open-air car parks behind Han Chin Pet Soo, off Jalan Panglima | In use when last reported, and the site of the planned complex. We would expect fewer bays once work starts | The Star, 27 January 2023 and 24 April 2026 |
| New multi-storey complex, Jalan Panglima | Not built. Groundbreaking was in April 2025, and a year later land and concession terms were still unsettled. About 350 bays planned | The Star, 24 April 2026 |
| Old multi-storey, Jalan Dato Maharajalela | Disused, so ignore it if an old map shows it | The Star, 20 June 2025 |
| Around Ipoh Railway Station | Limited bays shared with court visitors, and drivers circle several times | The Star, 20 June 2025 |
The complex would add to 378 existing bays, The Star said in April 2025. We found no report after April 2026 saying work has started. Outside the old town it gets easier. Tourism Malaysia says Tasik Cermin has a large free car park.
Things to do in Ipoh old town
Tourism Malaysia puts Concubine Lane, Kong Heng Square and Han Chin Pet Soo within a short walk of each other, so start there. This is not a ranking.
| Place | What you do there | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima) | Cafes, trinket stalls, snacks and souvenirs among pre-war buildings | MBI; The Star |
| Kong Heng Square | Restored old buildings, an artisan market, murals and small eateries, right behind Concubine Lane | Tourism Malaysia; Ipoh Echo |
| Han Chin Pet Soo | Malaysia's first Hakka tin-mining museum, in the old miners' club, with life-size dioramas of the mines and the club's gambling and opium days | Ipoh Echo, 5 December 2025 |
| Ipoh Mural Art's Lane | Ernest Zacharevic painted eight murals here in 2014 and seven are left, with more by other artists since. Tourism Malaysia says the Ipoh Tourist Information Centre has a trail map | Tourism Malaysia |
| MBI's heritage trail | Dewan Bandaraya Ipoh, the Birch Memorial Clock Tower, Majestic Walk at Ipoh Railway Station, Masjid Panglima Bukit Gantang and Masjid Negeri | MBI, page updated 29 October 2026 |
| Kinta Riverwalk | A shaded path for walking and jogging | The Star, 1 June 2026 |
| Gerbang Malam | The city's night market, along Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar | The Star, 6 June 2025 |
Reserve Han Chin Pet Soo before you go. ipohWorld asks visitors to book through its site, and Ipoh Echo says the museum draws about 1,000 people a month. MBI also lists Lorong Seni at Lorong Panglima and has posted a notice of new operating hours for it, so read that before you plan around it.
Cave temples and Tasik Cermin
Ipoh sits among limestone hills, and Tourism Perak counts nearly thirty cave temples. You need the car for this day. Published opening times for some of these disagree with each other, so check on the day.
| Place | What it is for | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| Tasik Cermin | A mirror lake reached through a 90-metre old mining tunnel, with a boat ride of about 20 minutes. A second lake sits behind a 130-metre water tunnel | Near Gunung Rapat. A 20-minute drive from the old town, per Tourism Malaysia, and best in the morning |
| Sam Poh Tong | Tourism Malaysia calls it Malaysia's biggest cave temple. Buddha statues, tortoises at the back and a garden with a goldfish pond | Foot of Gunung Rapat. Take Jalan Gopeng towards Simpang Pulai, then the slip road behind the pomelo stalls |
| Ling Sen Tong | A Taoist temple beside Sam Poh Tong, with statues of deities and folklore figures at the entrance | Same slip road |
| Kek Lok Tong | A big cave temple with a garden, two lakes and a jogging path around them | Gunung Rapat. No direct public transport, so drive |
| Perak Tong | A golden Buddha over 40 feet high, murals, and 450 steps to a view over the city | Gunung Tasek, north of the city. Tourism Malaysia sends drivers to the Ipoh Utara interchange |
Do Tasik Cermin first, since Tourism Malaysia says the reflections are best in the morning. Sam Poh Tong and Ling Sen Tong are next to each other, so take them together.
Kellie's Castle, Gopeng and Lost World
These take you out of the city, so pick one or two rather than all of them.
Kellie's Castle is at Batu Gajah, the unfinished house of Scottish planter William Kellie-Smith. Tourism Malaysia says it was meant to have a six-storey tower, secret tunnels and a rooftop courtyard. Work stopped when he died in 1926. Sources disagree on when it began, with Tourism Malaysia saying 1915 and Bernama 1905. Ipoh Echo reported in November 2025 that Fest Imperio Sdn Bhd manages the site. Bernama wrote up its dark tourism push in September 2024, so ask if you want a night tour.
Gopeng makes the easiest stop on the way home, since PLUS has an exit there. Tourism Malaysia lists two reasons to get off.
- HOGA Gaharu Tea Valley, with tram rides up the agarwood plantation and gaharu tea and ice cream at the deli.
- Muzium Gopeng, a community museum of mining tools and photographs in a former horse stable.
Gua Tempurung is also in Gopeng, 25km from Ipoh by Tourism Malaysia's count, with 1.9km of the cave open to visitors. Dry tours climb over 600 steps, and wet tours wade the underground river for two to three hours. The Star reported in January 2026 that a concessionaire will redevelop the site over six years, starting with a safety survey of the cave. Call first to see which tours are running.
Lost World of Tambun suits a family day: a theme park, water park, petting zoo and hot springs on one site. Bernama reported an event there in October 2026. Its own site has the current days.
What to eat in Ipoh
Tourism Malaysia's Perak food guide is undated, so check that a shop is still open before driving across town for it. TheSmartLocal's March 2026 list names hor fun and salted chicken as the two to look for, and Motorist's 2023 road trip stopped for hor fun as well.
| Dish | What it is | Named by Tourism Malaysia |
|---|---|---|
| White coffee | Ipoh's own coffee, served with hot milk | OldTown White Coffee at Ipoh Padang, Yee Hoi, Chang Jiang White Coffee, Kong Heng Kopitiam |
| Salted chicken | Marinated whole chicken, wrapped in paper and baked in rock salt | Aun Kheng Lim (pork-free), Ipoh Kheng Lim, Feng Weng |
| Nasi ganja | Rice drowned in curries, with fish or chicken, usually eaten at lunch. Go early | Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah at Kedai Kopi Yong Suan, Nasi Kandar Pekan Lama |
| Caramel pudding and kaya toast | On the menu with the white coffee | Kong Heng Kopitiam |
Check the halal status yourself. Tourism Malaysia marks several of the salted chicken shops as non-halal or pork-free, and it does not mark the coffee shops at all.
Pairing Ipoh with Cameron Highlands
The two fit together because the exits are neighbours. Simpang Pulai is the exit for the newer road up to the highlands, and PLUS's fare between it and Ipoh Selatan was RM1.48 on 2 November 2026. Tapah, the other way up, is RM5.90 from Ipoh Selatan.
Do Ipoh first and the climb comes after a rest, which is the order we would pick. Our Cameron Highlands drive guide covers which road to take and where the recent landslides were. Add at least two nights to the plan above if you do both.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Ipoh?
We would give it two full days, which makes four days and three nights from Singapore once you count the road each way. Add a fifth day for Lost World of Tambun, Gua Tempurung or Cameron Highlands.
What are the main things to do in Ipoh?
In the old town: Concubine Lane, Kong Heng Square, the murals and Han Chin Pet Soo. By car: Tasik Cermin, the Gunung Rapat cave temples, Perak Tong and Kellie's Castle. Then white coffee, salted chicken and hor fun.
How long is the drive to Ipoh from Singapore?
TheSmartLocal put it at roughly 8 hours in March 2026. ICA said in August 2026 that cars leaving at peak had waited up to three hours at the checkpoint, so cross early.
How much are the tolls from Singapore to Ipoh?
PLUS's calculator gave a Class 1 car RM62.23 from BSI to Ipoh Selatan and RM67.14 from Tanjung Kupang on 2 November 2026. Add Malaysia's RM20 road charge per entry and the Singapore toll.
Where should I park in Ipoh old town?
The open-air car parks behind Han Chin Pet Soo were in use when last reported, but bays are short at weekends and the new complex there has not been built. Arrive early, and drop your passengers first if it is busy.
Can I use Park@Perak with a Singapore car?
We could not confirm it. The app's site asks for an identity card number to register, and nothing we found mentions foreign plates, so ask at park@perak.gov.my before you go.
Where should I stop on the way to Ipoh?
Ayer Keroh or Seremban for a long stop, since getting off there adds nothing to the PLUS fare. R&R Tapah has Petronas and Shell if you need RON97 before Ipoh.
