Tioman from Singapore by car: Mersing route, parking, monsoon
Written and reviewed by the Radiant VEP Solutions team.
The drive to Tioman from Singapore in your own car: Federal Route 3 to Mersing Jetty, the car parks by the terminal, why Tanjung Gemok shuts for the monsoon, and how many spare days to keep for the ferry home.
In this article
To reach Tioman from Singapore in your own car, cross at Woodlands, take Federal Route 3 through Kota Tinggi to Mersing Jetty on Jalan Abu Bakar, and board the ferry there. Published drive times start at 2 hours from the checkpoint, before any queue.
The car stays on the mainland. Mersing Harbour Centre's site names two car parks by the terminal, the public MD Car Park and the private Rawa Car Park. Both charge by the day and neither promises you a lot.
Check the ferry before you book anything. The northeast monsoon began on 27 October 2026, and MetMalaysia expects it to last until mid-March. Tanjung Gemok has no boat until then. Mersing has kept a thin service in some years, though bad weather has stopped it for days at a time, and that goes for the boat home as well.
Key takeaways
- Use Mersing Jetty until March. Tioman SpeedBoat suspends its Tanjung Gemok service from 1 November to 28 February, and Berjaya Hotels gives the same months for the terminal.
- Keep spare days for the way home, since Tioman Ferry warns the boat back can be suspended for a number of days while the car park keeps charging.
- Expect heavy rain in Pahang and Johor in December, says MetMalaysia (NST, 30 October 2026).
- Avoid 6 to 9 November if you can. ICA expects heavy traffic at both checkpoints for Deepavali.
- Mersing's sailing times move almost daily with the high water. Some dates have no ferry at all.

Singapore to Mersing by car
Cataferry publishes three road lists from the Singapore side. All of them finish on Jalan Abu Bakar in Mersing. Mersing Harbour Centre gives its map coordinates as 2.433676, 103.839457, which is the simplest thing to put in your phone.
| Route | Roads | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Federal Route 3 (AH18), then Jalan Abu Bakar | Starting from Woodlands. This is the one we would take |
| 2 | North-South Expressway (E2), Jalan Renggam or J26, Jalan Nitar Utama, Jalan Abu Bakar | Starting from Tuas, or if the map shows trouble at Kota Tinggi |
| 3 | Senai-Desaru Expressway (E22), Jalan Bukit Aping and Kangkar Papan on Route 99, Jalan Abu Bakar | Starting from Tuas, with a card that works on the E22 |
Cataferry's route 3 is not Federal Route 3, so read the road names and ignore the numbers. Wikipedia's road notes describe Federal Route 3 as a divided highway out of Johor Bahru and a super two highway from Kota Tinggi onwards, and it only reaches the coast at Mersing.
Published drive times
| Source | From | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Cataferry, undated | Singapore (CIQ) | 2 hours |
| TheSmartLocal, updated 24 March 2025 | Woodlands Checkpoint | About 2 hours 10 minutes |
| GoIslands, undated | Singapore | Allow at least 3 hours, and about 2 more on a public holiday or the eve of one |
| Berjaya Hotels, undated | Singapore | About 3 hours 30 minutes |
None of these counts the checkpoint. ICA said car travellers at peak hours waited up to three hours over the September 2026 school holidays. We found no official distance for the drive, so it is left out here. Your map will show one.
Which checkpoint
Woodlands lines up with Federal Route 3 and costs less on both sides of the border. Tuas works if you start in the west, but its departure car zones are closing in phases until late 2027 (The Star, 26 August 2026). ICA also asks drivers to watch for roadworks at both. Our Woodlands or Tuas guide has the full comparison, the JB traffic guide covers when queues build, and the QR clearance guide covers the booth.
What to have ready
LTA wants at least three-quarters of a tank on leaving Singapore and a valid licence. It also wants printed copies of your insurance certificate and road tax. Neither checkpoint has a top-up machine, so load your stored-value card at home. The checklist for driving across has the rest.
Mersing jetty parking
Jetty car parks are the question the taxi and bus pages skip. Mersing Harbour Centre's site, which is unsigned and calls itself a personal blog, is the fullest source we found. It says Mersing has three car parks and describes two. TheSmartLocal names the same two. GoIslands, a Tioman tour seller, lists four but gives them no names.
| Car park | Who it is for | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| MD Car Park | The public | Just opposite the jetty | Fenced and staffed. The lot is paved, with little shelter from the weather, and it gets busy on weekends and holidays |
| Rawa Car Park | Rawa Island guests first, the public when there is room | Next to Mersing Harbour Centre | Fenced and staffed. Public lots are limited in public and school holidays and from April to September |
The catch with late ferries
MD Car Park keeps daytime opening hours. Mersing Harbour Centre warns that spring tides can push a ferry outside them, on the way out or on the way back, and it recommends arranging things beforehand. The site does not say what happens to a car behind a closed gate, so ask the staff before you leave it.
Holding a space
The site has a parking inquiry form that asks for your dates and your resort. It says plainly that it cannot promise a space, since lots go as cars arrive. We would send the form anyway, then arrive early. GoIslands says the car parks fill up fast on weekends and public holidays.
Both car parks charge per day, and the site says rates rise from time to time, so we have not printed one here. Ask at the gate what happens if your ferry home is cancelled. A stranded weekend becomes extra days on the bill, and you want to know who to call.
GoIslands calls three of its four car parks guarded. One of those three is for Rawa Island customers only. We would treat anything not fenced and staffed as a second choice for a car left several nights.
When the Tioman ferry does not run
There are three separate reasons, and they need different checks.
The monsoon
MetMalaysia said the 2026 northeast monsoon began on 27 October and should run until mid-March. It forecasts three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain between November and January, and Pahang and Johor get their turn in December. Strong winds can bring rough seas in the South China Sea. Warnings go out up to three days ahead, so look again three days before you drive.
On 2 November 2026 we found no notice from any operator saying Mersing had stopped for this season, and none saying it will sail throughout. Sources give different months, so plan on the widest range.
| Source | Jetty | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Tioman SpeedBoat, operator | Tanjung Gemok | Suspended 1 November to 28 February under Marine Department safety rules, resuming 1 March |
| Berjaya Hotels | Tanjung Gemok | Terminal closed from November to February |
| Tioman Ferry, which sells Bluewater Express tickets | Tanjung Gemok | No ferry in the monsoon months |
| Tioman Ferry | Mersing | November to February are the windy months. On a very windy day the authorities may bar the ferry altogether |
| GoIslands | Mersing | As few as one trip a day from November to March |
The record at Mersing
Past seasons show why nobody can promise you a date. The newest operator notices we could read are from 2018, so use the table for the pattern.
| When | What happened | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| November 2016 | Tanjung Gemok stopped from 15 November to the end of the monsoon, and Mersing ran day to day from 1 November | Tioman Ferry notice, 25 October 2016 |
| February 2017 | About 500 visitors were stuck on the island after Bluewater Express suspended the ferry in bad weather | New Straits Times, 14 February 2017 |
| December 2017 and January 2018 | Mersing sailings cancelled on 10 and 11 December, 17 to 19 December and 1 to 3 January | Tioman Ferry notices |
| October 2021 | Pahang's tourism committee chairman said ferries would be suspended until the monsoon ended | New Straits Times, 7 October 2021 |
| December 2023 | Teluk Gading suspended until 1 March 2024, with Mersing the only way across | Tioman Development Authority, in New Straits Times, 31 December 2023 |
The tide
Mersing's river mouth is shallow, so the boat needs high water. Tioman Ferries says departure times change almost daily for that reason, and its schedules mark some dates NIL for no ferry. Cataferry says the same of its timetable. This has nothing to do with the season, so a calm day can still have no boat.
Resorts closing
Tioman Ferry says some resorts stay open in the monsoon and others close, and the same goes for restaurants and rental outfits. It changes each year. A resort owner told New Straits Times in 2021 that resorts would close for three to four months. Confirm with your resort that it is open, and ask how it hears about cancelled boats.
Planning the trip around the ferry
Work backwards from the sailing. Tioman Ferry asks you to be at the terminal at least one hour before departure, and that hour has to survive a queue at the checkpoint. We would pick the ferry date first, then decide whether you can make it the same morning.
- Open the schedule for your date on the ticket site, since the next month's times tend to come out a couple of weeks before it starts (GoIslands).
- If the boat leaves in the morning, cross the day before and sleep in Mersing. Mersing Harbour Centre's site has a list of hotels in town.
- If it leaves in the afternoon, cross early and leave yourself the whole margin.
- Send the parking form and check your resort is open.
- Check MetMalaysia's warnings and the flood news on the morning you leave.
If you must go between November and March
The Station Tioman, a property on the island, advises adding extra days to your schedule for the return to the mainland, because delays and cancellations can run for several days. We would not fly out of Changi the day after your booked ferry home, and we would not book anything you cannot move.
The ride itself takes about 1.5 hours by New Straits Times' count and about 2 by Berjaya's, and Tioman Ferry warns of high seas in these months. Anyone in your group who gets seasick should know that before you commit.
Which operator
Bluewater Express has its counter at Mersing Harbour Centre, per Tioman Ferry's contact details. Cataferry's own site lists Mersing departures, while GoIslands' pages disagree on whether it still sails from there, so run your date through Cataferry's schedule search before you count on it.
Federal Route 3 in the wet months
The road floods too. Stretches of it sit on known flood spots, so check it the same way you check the boat.
| Date | What happened | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| 25 December 2023 | About 0.15m of water on Jalan Kota Tinggi-Mersing at Kim Long after heavy rain | Sinar Harian, quoting Kota Tinggi police |
| 8 January 2024 | Some main roads in Kota Tinggi town closed, and police told the public to put off trips into town. The Kota Tinggi-Mersing road through the bypass was named as a way out, though it took much longer | Malay Mail |
| 21 January 2024 | The Works Minister named four flood-prone locations in the Kota Tinggi area: Sections 47 to 49, 55 to 56, 59 to 61 and 71 to 72 | Malay Mail |
That last report also carried JKR's count of 103 accidents on the route in the Mersing area between 1 January 2021 and 10 December 2023, 27 of them fatal. We would drive it in daylight, and we would not push on through standing water with a ferry to catch. Miss the boat instead.
A new bridge is meant to help. The Deputy Works Minister said in April 2026 that the Kota Tinggi Bypass Bridge, built higher than the old low one, was 85% complete and due to open on 28 July. We found no report confirming it opened, so follow your map through Kota Tinggi.
If your map sends you across on FT50 from Kahang, watch for animals. The Sun reported that videos show tigers, elephants, tapirs and leopards crossing there, with vehicles hitting wildlife, and a wildlife crossing due by February 2028.
Tolls and petrol on the way to Mersing
These are one-way figures for a car. The Singapore tolls are LTA's, last updated 28 May 2025. The Malaysian checkpoint tolls are from PLUS's fare calculator on 2 November 2026, and the road charge is JPJ's figure per entry.
| Charge | Woodlands | Tuas |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore toll, leaving | S$0.80 | S$2.10 |
| Singapore toll, coming home | None | S$2.10 |
| Malaysian checkpoint toll | RM2.37 at BSI | RM6.14 at Tanjung Kupang |
| Malaysia's road charge, per entry | RM20 | RM20 |
JPJ says the road charge can come from a Touch 'n Go card or the eWallet app. The E22 and the North-South Expressway on Cataferry's other two routes add their own fares, and the E22 operator takes Touch 'n Go cards and SmartTAGs only. We found no toll plaza listed on Federal Route 3 itself. Load the card for the way home before you leave it parked for a week.
Buy RON97 only. Malaysia bars foreign-registered cars from RON95, and since 1 April 2026 the driver or owner can be charged as well as the station. We could not confirm named stations along Federal Route 3, so use your map, and read the nozzle before you lift it. The petrol guide has this week's price and the penalties.
Tanjung Gemok, once it reopens
Tanjung Gemok and Teluk Gading are the same jetty, and it sits in Rompin, Pahang. New Straits Times puts Mersing about 30 minutes from it. TheSmartLocal gives about 2 hours 45 minutes from Woodlands Checkpoint, against 2 hours 10 minutes for Mersing. Tioman Ferry suggests it when Mersing's sailing time does not suit you, which is useful from March.
Parking is tighter. Hotel Mersing's site says the lots are modest in size and suggests reserving in advance. GoIslands says there is one open-air car park, normally full on a weekend or public holiday. If you are booked there, check again in February that it has reopened on the date you expect.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive from Singapore to Tioman?
You can drive to the jetty, not the island. The car stays in a car park at Mersing or Tanjung Gemok, and you cross by ferry.
How long is the drive from Singapore to Mersing Jetty?
Cataferry gives 2 hours from CIQ and TheSmartLocal about 2 hours 10 minutes from Woodlands Checkpoint. GoIslands says to allow at least 3 hours, and Berjaya Hotels gives about 3.5 hours from Singapore. Add the queue at the checkpoint.
Where do I park at Mersing Jetty overnight?
Mersing Harbour Centre's site names MD Car Park, a public lot opposite the jetty, and Rawa Car Park beside the centre, which puts Rawa Island guests first. Both are fenced and staffed, and neither can promise a space.
Does the Tioman ferry run in November?
Not from Tanjung Gemok, where Tioman SpeedBoat suspends service from 1 November to 28 February. Mersing has run a reduced service in past years, and weather can cancel it. We found no notice for this season on 2 November 2026, so check your date on the schedule.
When does the Tioman monsoon end?
MetMalaysia expects the 2026 northeast monsoon to last until mid-March. Tioman SpeedBoat resumes on 1 March, and in 2023 the Tioman Development Authority gave the same date for Teluk Gading.
What happens if the ferry back to Mersing is cancelled?
You stay on the island until it sails, and the car stays parked. Tioman Ferry says a suspension can last a number of days, so keep spare days and ask the car park how it handles an overstay.
Which jetty is better for Tioman by car?
Mersing is closer to Singapore, and it was the one still sailing in the 2023 monsoon. Tanjung Gemok is an option from March to October, with small car parks.
