An east coast Malaysia road trip from Singapore goes up Federal Route 3 through Kota Tinggi, Mersing and Pekan to Kuantan and Cherating. From there you can take the East Coast Expressway (E8) or stay on Route 3 to Kuala Terengganu. We would give it six days: four with long drives and two to stop.

Do not go for the beaches or the islands before March. The northeast monsoon began on 27 October 2026, and MetMalaysia expects it to last until mid-March, with continuous heavy rain in Kelantan and Terengganu this month and in Pahang and Johor in December. Terengganu shut its forest parks and hiking trails on 1 November, and most island resorts close for the season.

If the dates are fixed, keep a spare day and read the closure notices before each leg. Flood water has shut Route 3 and the E8 in past seasons.

    Key takeaways

    • Reach Kuantan on Federal Route 3 through Mersing, or inland on the North-South Expressway and the Tun Razak Highway (FT12). Past Kuantan, the E8 and Route 3 both reach Kuala Terengganu.
    • Six days covers Kuantan, Cherating and Kuala Terengganu. Add two for Kota Bharu, where the road is Route 3 alone because the E8 stops at Kuala Terengganu.
    • A car pays RM18.64 from Jabor to Kuala Terengganu on the E8, by LPT2's calculator on 3 November 2026. Pay by Touch 'n Go card or SmartTAG.
    • Going north on the E8, fill up by Paka. LPT2 names no petrol brand at Bukit Besi or Ajil, the two stops after it.
    • Avoid 6 to 9 November, when ICA expects heavy traffic at both checkpoints for Deepavali, and all of December, when the rain reaches Pahang and Johor.

The route to Kuala Terengganu by road

Federal Route 3 is the spine of the trip. Wikipedia's road notes give it 739km from Johor Bahru to Rantau Panjang on the Thai border, and it reaches the sea at Mersing. It is a divided road out of Johor Bahru, a super two highway from Kota Tinggi to Pekan, then divided again from Pekan to Kuantan.

Singapore to Kuantan by car, two ways

Route 3 suits a Woodlands start and passes Mersing, which is also the jetty for Tioman. Our Tioman guide has that stretch road by road, flood spots and all.

The inland way runs up the North-South Expressway to Yong Peng, then Federal Route 1 to Segamat, where the Tun Razak Highway (FT12) starts. FT12 runs 146.8km to Gambang, and Federal Route 2 takes you into Kuantan. The Automobile Association of Singapore's 2023 tour to Kuantan stopped for breakfast at Yong Peng on its first day. The Woodlands or Tuas guide helps you pick a checkpoint for either.

PLUS, LTA and JKR publish no time for the drive to Kuantan. Rome2Rio, a route planner, estimates 358km and about 4 hours 54 minutes from Tuas. Count that as the least you will take, since no queue is in it. ICA reported waits of up to three hours for cars leaving Singapore at peak in September 2026, and the JB traffic guide covers when they build.

Route 3 or the E8 past Kuantan

The E8 is the quick choice and it charges a toll. Phase 2 runs from Jabor to Kampung Gemuruh near Kuala Nerus, where it meets Route 3 again. Cherating sits on Route 3, and Wikipedia's interchange list gives Jabor as its E8 exit. Take Route 3 if you want the coastal towns and have the daylight for them.

Kota Bharu has no expressway. The planned 122km extension, LPT3, had no concessionaire when the Deputy Works Minister spoke in Parliament in July 2026, and its proposal documents were still being finalised.

How many days for the east coast

Six days is our call, based on how far the stops sit from each other. The Automobile Association of Singapore's 2023 tour ran the same length, with Kuantan on the first night, Terengganu on the third and Desaru on the fifth.

5South on the E8, then Route 3 past KuantanMersing or Desaru
    6Home, crossing earlyYour own bed

Kota Bharu adds two days, one up Route 3 and one back. A night in Mersing on the way up makes the first day easier if you start late or cross at a busy hour.

Day 5 is the long one. We would stop in Desaru only if you are happy to arrive late, and our Desaru guide has the E22 route and parking. Short of six days? Our long weekend list sorts the nearer trips.

When not to go: the monsoon, month by month

MetMalaysia's forecast for the 2026 northeast monsoon, as reported by the New Straits Times, expects three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain between November and January. Warnings go out up to three days ahead, and the risk of major floods rises when long rain meets a high tide. Check again three days before you leave.

March 2027The monsoon should end by mid-March, and resorts have reopened in March in past yearsThe first month we would pick

The start date moves from year to year. Last season began on 13 November 2025, MetMalaysia said at the time, so look again before booking next October or November.

    Who does go now

Surfers. Cherating Point Surf School told the New Straits Times in 2019 that it takes students from October to March. The Star reported on 30 October 2026 that rough seas could affect Kuala Pahang, Tioman, Cherating and Terengganu, and a surf camp director warned beginners to stay out without a certified instructor who knows the waves. Everyone else should treat the sea as closed.

    Islands closing for the monsoon

We found no notice for 2026 to 2027 listing which island resorts have shut, so plan on the pattern below and ask your resort directly. Terengganu's government has not ordered the islands closed, its tourism committee chairman told Bernama in October 2025. Operators choose, and that makes the answer differ by resort.

    What the dated reports say

An open resort does not mean a calm stay. Floods on 23 November 2025 sent 369 people from Pulau Redang to a mosque in Kuala Nerus, and 44 on Perhentian to a relief centre, news site FMT reported. In December 2025 the state said the Marine Department decides whether tourists can reach particular islands.

    Forest parks and waterfalls

Terengganu's Forestry Department closed all eco-forest parks, hiking trails and recreation in its Permanent Reserved Forests from 1 November 2026, with the reopening date to be announced. The state also banned swimming and camping near waterfalls last season. If your plan was an inland day out of Kuala Terengganu, check it with the department first.

    Flood and road closure notices

On 3 November 2026 we found no report of a flood closure on Route 3 or the E8 this season. That only tells you about our search on that morning, and the month of heavy rain forecast for Terengganu has just started. These are the dated closures that show where the water goes.

Two things follow. The expressway floods as well, so it will not save you in the wet months. And a road reported open may be open to heavy vehicles only, which rules out your car.

Where to check before each leg

    • JKR's disaster page, bencana.jkr.gov.my, which Malay Mail named in December 2024 as the place JKR lists closures and alternatives. We could not load it from our side on 3 November 2026. The Works Ministry also points road users to JKR's social media.
    • LPT2's traffic account on X, @lpt2trafik, for the northern E8.
    • MetMalaysia's warnings, three days out and again the night before.

Kota Tinggi has its own flood record, which is in the Tioman guide.

Tolls on the East Coast Expressway, in RM

These are one-way fares for a car, class 1. The E8 fares come from LPT2's own calculator and the North-South fare from PLUS's, both read on 3 November 2026. The E8 is a closed system, so you pay by distance between entry and exit.

The Works Minister said on 19 December 2025 that LPT2's toll would not rise in 2026. LPT2 takes Touch 'n Go cards and SmartTAG at all its plazas, and it lists Touch 'n Go kiosks at Perasing, Paka, Ajil and Bukit Besi.

We found no toll plaza listed on Route 3 itself. Malaysia's road charge is RM20 per entry, paid by Touch 'n Go card or the eWallet app, says JPJ. Singapore's own tolls are in our checklist for driving across, along with the three-quarter tank rule and the papers LTA wants you to carry.

Petrol stops on the east coast

Your car may buy RON97 only. RON95 is barred to foreign-registered vehicles, and since 1 April 2026 the driver or owner can be charged as well as the station. A Singapore driver was fined RM20,000 for it in July 2026. Our petrol guide has this week's price and the penalties, so read it before you stop at a pump in a small town.

So plan your last fill-up on the northbound E8 at Paka. Neither source says which grades each station sells, so read the nozzle before you lift it. Wikipedia lists Paka and Kijal in both directions, though LPT2's page gives only the northbound side, so confirm on your map before you rely on them coming home.

On Route 3 we could not confirm named stations from Petronas or Shell. Fill up in the towns you pass, and do not leave Mersing or Pekan on a low tank. On the inland road, Shell's finder lists a station at Muadzam Shah.

What to stop for along the way

This is what each stop is for. We leave out prices and hours because they go stale, so check those with the place itself.

    Kuantan and Cherating

Pantai Teluk Cempedak was the first-day beach on the Automobile Association of Singapore's 2023 Kuantan tour. Cherating is the surf stop in the monsoon months. The Department of Fisheries gives KM45 of Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman for its turtle centre there, but its site was down for maintenance on 3 November 2026, so confirm it is open before you turn off.

    Kuala Terengganu

The Crystal Mosque stands inside the 33ha Taman Tamadun Islam on Wan Man island in Sungai Terengganu, The Star reported in February 2024. Pasar Payang, the central market, has a newly built block, Pasar Payang 1, which the city council set to open in August 2024. A Bernama survey carried by The Sun found thousands of visitors across Pasar Payang 1 and 2 in the school holidays, with batik and silk among the stalls.

    Kota Bharu

Pasar Siti Khadijah is the reason to go, with about 1,500 traders and a refit the Housing Minister inspected in July 2025. The New Straits Times showed traders at work there in May 2026.

    Pulau Redang

Go in season only. The guide site redangisland.org says most resorts send their boats to Merang Jetty, so the car stays on the mainland. Ask your resort about parking when you book.

    Taman Negara

Tourism Malaysia measures the park from Kuala Lumpur, at 240km, and we found no published route from Kuantan, so we would treat it as a separate trip. Both canopy walkways were closed for repairs in October 2025, says the New Straits Times, so ask first. It also floods: in December 2021 Pahang's disaster centre told tourists to leave and stopped entry at Kuala Tahan.

    Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for an east coast Malaysia road trip?

We would take six days for Kuantan, Cherating and Kuala Terengganu, and eight with Kota Bharu. The Automobile Association of Singapore ran a six-day tour of Kuantan, Terengganu and Desaru in 2023.

How long is the drive from Singapore to Kuantan by car?

PLUS, LTA and JKR publish no time. Rome2Rio estimates about 4 hours 54 minutes from Tuas over 358km, with no queue counted, and ICA reported peak waits of up to three hours for cars leaving Singapore in 2026.

Is November a good time to drive up the east coast?

No. The northeast monsoon began on 27 October 2026, and MetMalaysia expects continuous heavy rain in Kelantan and Terengganu in November, then in Pahang and Johor in December. We would wait until March.

Does the East Coast Expressway go all the way to Kota Bharu?

No. It ends near Kuala Nerus, at Kuala Terengganu, and you continue on Federal Route 3. The planned LPT3 extension had no concessionaire in July 2026.

How much is the toll from Kuantan to Kuala Terengganu?

A car pays RM19.84 by LPT2's calculator on 3 November 2026, or RM18.64 entering at Jabor. Route 3 is the alternative, and we found no toll plaza listed on it.

Are Redang and Perhentian open in December?

Some large resorts stay open, but boats sail only about three or four times a month in the monsoon, according to Bernama in October 2025. Most operators have closed from October to February in past years, so ask your resort and keep spare days.

Where can I check if Federal Route 3 is flooded?

Malay Mail named JKR's page at bencana.jkr.gov.my in December 2024, and the Works Ministry also points to JKR's social media. Police reports in the local news often come first, as they did at Kuantan on 17 December 2025.
