A Malaysia road trip from Singapore on a three-day weekend means Melaka, Desaru, or Muar and Batu Pahat. KL fits too, if one full day there is enough. Four days opens up Ipoh, Cameron Highlands and Tioman. Penang wants five or more.

Do not go to Tioman from November to February, because the boats stop or can strand you, and a long weekend has no spare days. Leave Desaru's sea out of your plans from November to March. Keep off the North-South Expressway on the peak days around Hari Raya Puasa. On any long weekend, avoid crossing on the first evening: ICA reported waits of up to three hours in 2026.

This page sorts the trips and the dates. Routes, tolls and parking are in each trip's own guide, linked in the table.

    Key takeaways

    • Three days: Melaka, Desaru, or Muar and Batu Pahat. Four days: Ipoh, Cameron Highlands, Tioman, or KL with a night in Melaka.
    • MOM's 2027 list gives five three-day weekends with no leave: 1 to 3 January, 6 to 8 February, 26 to 28 March, 15 to 17 May and 7 to 9 August.
    • One day of leave makes four days around Vesak Day (20 to 23 May) and Deepavali (28 to 31 October). Three days of leave join Hari Raya Haji and Vesak Day into nine, from 15 to 23 May.
    • The peak days ICA named for the National Day weekend and the September school holidays in 2026 were both the first Friday, so cross early on the first morning.
    • MetMalaysia expects this monsoon to last until mid-March 2027, with continuous heavy rain in Pahang and Johor in December.

Malaysia road trip ideas by days and distance

The distances and times are what named sources publish. Where nobody publishes a figure, the table says so. The days are our call: if the road alone takes most of a day, the trip needs four days to leave two there.

    Trips that share a road

Three pairings save you a second drive. Muar sits on Federal Route 5 towards Melaka, so the two fit into one three-day trip. A night in Melaka splits the drive to KL and adds nothing to the PLUS toll. Ipoh and Cameron Highlands have neighbouring exits, but together they need a fifth day.

    Which checkpoint

Use Woodlands for Desaru and Mersing. Everything else runs up the North-South Expressway and works from either side: Woodlands costs less, and Tuas joins the expressway at Senai North without Johor Bahru's streets. Our Woodlands or Tuas guide has the comparison.

    Under three days

A road trip from Singapore can be one day. Our JB day plans cover that, and Batu Pahat or Desaru work with an early start.

    Singapore's 2027 long weekends

These dates come from MOM's public holiday list and MOE's 2027 school calendar. The picks are ours, based on the days available and the monsoon section below.

2027 public holidays and the trip each one allows
    DatesHolidayTime offOur pick

    What is left of 2026

Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November, so Monday 9 November is the holiday if your rest day is the Sunday, and ICA expects heavy traffic at both checkpoints from Friday 6 to Monday 9 November. Christmas Day is a Friday, which gives three days, but MetMalaysia expects continuous heavy rain in Johor and Pahang in December. We would take Melaka or KL.

    Checkpoint waits on long weekends

All of these are for cars leaving Singapore. ICA posted the Labour Day figures on Facebook, as The Straits Times reported. The rest are from its media releases.

    What ICA reported for 2026
    PeriodQueue for cars leavingBusiest day
Labour Day long weekend, 30 April to 3 MayTwo hours or more at Woodlands and at least three hours at Tuas, at about 7.15pm on Thursday 30 AprilNot given. The queue reached BKE Exit 10A at Woodlands and the middle of the Second Link Bridge at Tuas
National Day weekend, 7 to 10 AugustUp to three hours at peakFriday 7 August, more than 593,000 travellers
September school holidays, 4 to 14 SeptemberUp to three hours at peakFriday 4 September, more than 599,000 travellers, a record
Deepavali long weekend, 6 to 9 NovemberICA expects heavy trafficNot yet reported

What to do with those numbers

ICA advises non-peak hours such as early mornings and late evenings. We would leave before dawn on the first morning, because every figure above points at the first evening or first day. ICA puts the three-hour waits down to tailbacks from Malaysia.

On the Labour Day evening, Tuas was the longer queue, so do not treat it as the quiet option. Parts of its departure car zones are also closing in phases until late 2027, and ICA says works are going on near Woodlands as well. Check LTA's traffic cameras on OneMotoring, then the signs on the BKE and AYE. ICA asks drivers to use MyICA QR codes, which our QR clearance guide covers.

None of these releases gives a wait for the drive home. Our JB traffic guide covers when queues build.

    After the checkpoint

Malaysia's own holidays fill the expressway. PLUS forecast up to 2.3 million vehicles a day on the peak days around Hari Raya Aidilfitri in 2026, about 21% above its average, and said Chinese New Year passed two million. We found no 2027 dates from PLUS yet. Its MyPLUS-TTA schedule in the PLUS app suggests when to travel. Stop every two to three hours, as TripZilla suggests for the KL drive.

East coast monsoon and when not to go

MetMalaysia said the 2026 northeast monsoon began on 27 October and should last until mid-March 2027. It expects continuous heavy rain in Kelantan and Terengganu in November, then Pahang and Johor in December. Warnings for rain, strong winds and rough seas go out up to three days ahead.

The start date moves. Last season's began on 13 November 2025, so check MetMalaysia again before Deepavali 2027.

When we would avoid each trip
    TripAvoidWhy
TiomanNovember to FebruaryTioman SpeedBoat suspends its Tanjung Gemok service from 1 November to 28 February. On a very windy day the authorities may stop the Mersing ferry too (Tioman Ferry), and about 500 visitors were stuck on the island in February 2017 (New Straits Times). A long weekend has no room for that
DesaruAny beach plan from November to MarchJohor's fire and rescue director tied a rise in drownings to the monsoon in November 2024. Plan around the waterpark and the farm instead
Cameron HighlandsAfter days of heavy rainIt is in Pahang, on MetMalaysia's December list. A landslide shut the Simpang Pulai road from 25 October to 19 December 2024. Our guide has the record for both roads
MelakaArriving on Friday evening without a parking planRoads in the old town close to cars from 6pm on Friday to 1am on Monday, and often longer around public and school holidays (BBC Portal, October 2026)
Muar and Batu PahatDecember, if the forecast is badBoth are in Johor, which is on MetMalaysia's list for that month
KL and IpohThe peak days around Hari Raya PuasaThe expressway is the problem, not the weather. MetMalaysia forecasts below-average total rainfall for Perak this season

    Every trip starts in Johor

All of these routes begin with the Johor stretch, so December's rain can reach you even when your destination is outside the states on the list. MetMalaysia also warned of heavy rain causing floods near rivers and in low-lying areas, so look at the forecast again the night before you leave.

    What to have ready

LTA asks for at least three-quarters of a tank on leaving Singapore, a valid licence, and printed copies of your insurance certificate and road tax validity, which Malaysian officers may ask to see. There are no top-up machines at the checkpoints, so load your stored-value card at home. In Malaysia, a Singapore car may only buy RON97, since RON95 is barred to foreign vehicles (Bernama, March 2026). Our checklist for driving across also covers tolls and the road charge.

    Frequently asked questions

Where can I go on a Malaysia road trip from Singapore in three days?

Melaka, Desaru, or Muar and Batu Pahat all leave you at least a full day there. KL also fits if one full day is enough.

Is four days enough for Cameron Highlands from Singapore?

Yes, if you sleep on the way up. Motorist puts the drive at about 7 hours 35 minutes by Simpang Pulai before any queue, so we would split it at Melaka or Ipoh. Adding Ipoh as a stay needs a fifth day.

How many three-day long weekends does Singapore have in 2027?

Five with no leave on MOM's list: New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, Good Friday, Hari Raya Haji and National Day. Labour Day and Christmas Day fall on Saturdays with no Monday listed.

How long is the checkpoint queue on a long weekend?

ICA reported up to three hours for cars leaving at peak over the 2026 National Day weekend and September school holidays, and at least three hours at Tuas on the eve of Labour Day. It advises early mornings and late evenings.

Which road trip from Singapore suits the monsoon months?

The west coast ones: Melaka, KL and Ipoh. MetMalaysia's forecast of continuous heavy rain, as the New Straits Times reported it on 30 October 2026, names Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor and Sarawak, though you still drive through Johor.

Can I take my car to Tioman?

No. You park on the mainland and take the ferry from Mersing. Tioman SpeedBoat suspends its Tanjung Gemok service from 1 November to 28 February.

Can I drive to Penang on a long weekend?

We would not try it in three or four days. TheSmartLocal puts the drive at roughly 7.5 hours before any queue, so keep Penang for five days or more, such as 15 to 23 May 2027.
