To drive from Singapore to Desaru, cross at Woodlands, clear Malaysia at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI), head out of Johor Bahru and join the Senai-Desaru Expressway (E22), which runs to Penawar. Desaru Coast's own site puts the drive at about 1.5 hours from Woodlands Checkpoint, and it says nothing about the queue before you get there.
The things to do in Desaru that suit a family are Adventure Waterpark, Desaru Fruit Farm and a river cruise on Sungai Lebam. We would give the waterpark its own day and pair the other two.
Between November and March, plan around the sea. Johor's east coast gets the northeast monsoon in those months, and if a red flag is up on the beach, keep everyone out of the water and away from its edge.
Key takeaways
- Cross at Woodlands. LTA's toll for a car is S$0.80 going out and nothing coming back, against S$2.10 each way at Tuas.
- Load a Touch 'n Go card or SmartTAG. The E22 takes only those, and a car pays RM7.20 to Penawar from Cahaya Baru or RM9.90 from Ulu Tiram on the operator's chart.
- Join at Ulu Tiram if you want the Shell stations at Layang, because joining at Cahaya Baru puts you past them. Buy RON97 only.
- Ask about parking before you rely on it. Of the places we checked, only Hard Rock Hotel publishes a rate, and Desaru Coast's site says nothing on the subject.
- A red flag on the beach means stay out. A Singaporean father died in December 2023 after waves hit him and his son at the water's edge.

The route from Singapore to Desaru by car
The Causeway part is the same for everyone: the BKE to Woodlands Checkpoint, the Causeway, then BSI, where PLUS's calculator shows a toll of RM2.37 for a car. After BSI there are two sensible ways onto the E22.
| Stage | East, by Pasir Gudang | North, by Ulu Tiram |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving BSI | Eastern Dispersal Link to the Bakar Batu interchange | Eastern Dispersal Link to the Pandan interchange |
| Next road | Federal Route 35 through Permas Jaya to Pasir Gudang, then Federal Route 17 | Federal Route 3 towards Kota Tinggi |
| Onto the E22 | Pasir Gudang junction at Tanjung Langsat, then on to Cahaya Baru | Ulu Tiram interchange |
| E22 toll to Penawar, Class 1 | RM7.20 from Cahaya Baru | RM9.90 from Ulu Tiram |
| Petrol on the way | You join east of the Layang stations | Shell at Layang, KM32 |
The operator publishes its entry points, but no route from the checkpoint. The roads before the E22 in this table come from published road lists on Wikipedia, so check them against a live map. We would set the map to Penawar and let the morning's traffic choose. The two ways differ by RM2.70 in toll, plus the petrol stop.
The E22 ends at Penawar, at a signalised junction with Federal Route 92. Change the map to your venue there, since Desaru Coast's address is Jalan Desaru in Bandar Penawar and Desaru Fruit Farm is at Sungai Chemaran.
How long the drive takes
| Stretch | Time | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| Woodlands Checkpoint to Desaru Coast | About 1.5 hours | Desaru Coast |
| Singapore to Hard Rock Hotel, by the Causeway | About 2 hours | Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast |
| Johor Bahru to Hard Rock Hotel on the E22 | About 1 hour 15 minutes | Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast |
| Cahaya Baru junction to Penawar junction | About 18 minutes | E22 operator |
| Senai Main junction to Penawar junction | About 45 minutes | E22 operator |
None of these counts the checkpoint. ICA reported car travellers leaving at peak hours over the 2026 National Day weekend waiting up to three hours for immigration clearance, and it advises early mornings and late evenings. Check LTA's traffic cameras before you start the car, and read the time stamped on the picture.
The two-lane stretch
Past Cahaya Baru the E22 is one lane each way, so a slow lorry can set your pace until the widening is finished. According to the Works Minister on 22 January 2026, work on the 9.34km from the Sungai Johor bridge to Sungai Semenchu began in November 2024 and is due to end in April 2027, while a further 4km from Cahaya Baru to the bridge is approved with no start date. The newest report we found is from his deputy on 1 February 2026, who put the first part at 55% and said traffic had not been disrupted.
When Tuas makes sense
Use Tuas if you start from the west of Singapore. You take the AYE and the Second Link, clear KSAB, follow the Second Link Expressway towards Senai and join the E22 at Senai Main junction. PLUS lists the Second Link Expressway at 47km and the operator lists the E22 at 77km, and you drive all of both. Parts of the Tuas departure car zones also close in phases until late 2027 (The Star, 26 August 2026). Our Woodlands or Tuas guide has the full comparison.
Tolls and what pays them
These are one-way figures for a car. The Singapore tolls are LTA's (last updated 28 May 2025). The BSI and Tanjung Kupang tolls are from PLUS's fare calculator, checked on 2 November 2026. The E22 fares are from the operator's chart, which carries no date, read on 2 November 2026.
| Charge | Woodlands, joining at Cahaya Baru | Woodlands, joining at Ulu Tiram | Tuas, joining at Senai |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore toll, leaving | S$0.80 | S$0.80 | S$2.10 |
| Singapore toll, coming home | None | None | S$2.10 |
| Malaysian checkpoint toll | RM2.37 at BSI | RM2.37 at BSI | RM6.14 at Tanjung Kupang |
| E22 to Penawar | RM7.20 | RM9.90 | RM13.50 |
| Malaysia's road charge, per entry | RM20 | RM20 | RM20 |
Each payment goes through its own system. The Singapore toll comes off a stored-value card at the immigration booth, and LTA says neither checkpoint has a top-up machine, so top up at home. The E22 is a closed system: you pay by distance when you exit, and the operator takes Touch 'n Go cards and SmartTAGs only. You can reload a Touch 'n Go card at the sales centre at any E22 toll plaza. JPJ says the road charge can be paid by Touch 'n Go card or the eWallet app.
The chart has no Pasir Gudang entry, and the operator's FAQ has you taking your ticket at Cahaya Baru, which is why that column uses the Cahaya Baru fare. PLUS's calculator gives its BSI and Tanjung Kupang figures with no direction, so keep enough on the card for the way home as well.
Petrol stops on the way to Desaru
You leave Singapore with at least three-quarters of a tank, since LTA requires it, so petrol is mostly a question for the way home. The E22 has one place to buy it.
| Stop | Where | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shell, Layang R&R, going east | KM32, towards Penawar and Desaru | E22 operator |
| Shell, Layang R&R, going west | KM31, towards Senai | E22 operator |
| Petronas Desaru | Bandar Penawar | SoyaCincau, 1 April 2026 |
Layang sits between Ulu Tiram and Cahaya Baru. Head home by Cahaya Baru and Pasir Gudang and you leave the E22 before you reach it, so fill up first or go back by Ulu Tiram.
Buy RON97 only. Malaysia bars foreign-registered cars from RON95, and since 1 April 2026 the driver or owner can be charged as well as the station. None of these sources says which grades a station stocks, so read the nozzle before you lift it. Malaysia is also restricting foreign cards at self-service pumps for RON95, so keep some ringgit and expect to pay at the counter. Our petrol guide has this week's price and the penalties.
What to have ready before the checkpoint
Pack the night before. LTA wants the tank at least three-quarters full when you leave Singapore, and it says Malaysian officers may ask for printed copies of your insurance certificate and road tax validity, so print both and bring a valid driving licence.
You need two cards with money on them: a stored-value card for the Singapore toll, and a Touch 'n Go card for BSI, the E22 and parking. Everyone in the car needs a passport, children included, because ICA says you must still bring it when you clear with a QR code. Our QR clearance guide goes through the steps.
The rest is in our checklist for driving across, and the JB traffic guide covers when the queues build.
Things to do in Desaru with children
Nothing here is ranked. The list starts from Desaru Coast's own pages and adds places named by Hard Rock Hotel's area guide, the Southeast Johor Development Agency or TheSmartLocal (updated 15 October 2026).
| Place | What you do there | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Adventure Waterpark | More than 20 wet and dry rides, with a water coaster and a very large wave pool | Families who want one big day out |
| Desaru Fruit Farm | A guided tour of a 100-acre farm with a gallery, fish pond, herb garden and petting zoo, a bee-keeping talk with raw honey, a restaurant and a mini mart | Small children and grandparents |
| ATV ride at the fruit farm | A guided ride around the farm | Older children. The farm's pages give no age rule and ticket listings disagree, so ask first |
| JungleWalla on Sungai Lebam | A river cruise through the mangroves, or kayaking, which Desaru Coast says suits the whole family. Also tidepool walks at low tide and birdwatching | Children who can sit still in a boat |
| Fireflies cruise | A night cruise at Sungai Lebam, which Desaru Coast pairs with a seafood dinner | A weekend, so nobody drives home after it |
| Dash Outdoors | A banana ride for children, zorb water balls, fat bikes in adult and child sizes, archery and paddleboarding | Children who want something active |
| Teluk Sengat Crocodile Farm | Guided tours and feeding sessions among more than 1,000 crocodiles, near Kota Tinggi | Animal lovers, though a TheSmartLocal reviewer says the boards are in Malay |
| Tanjung Balau | A beach, plus the Muzium Nelayan fishermen's museum, both listed by the Southeast Johor Development Agency | A short stop outside the monsoon months |
| Desaru Beach | 17km of sand, a 10-minute walk from Hard Rock Hotel, which also runs a shuttle at set times | Hotel guests, and only with no red flag up |
Hard Rock lists its Roxity Kids Club among the things day visitors can pay parking for, so ask the hotel if you want it without a room.
Before you go to Adventure Waterpark
These details come from Thrillark's 2026 guide. Thrillark sells tickets rather than running the park, so treat its list as a starting point, and let the sign at each ride decide. The park does not open every day of the week, so check its calendar before you plan around it.
| Ride or area | Rule |
|---|---|
| Scallywags, Starfish Splash, Li'l Warriors' Hideout, Tidal Wave Beach | No height rule |
| Penawar River | Under 122cm with an adult |
| Surf Wall | 107cm |
| Swinging Ship, Kraken's Revenge | 110cm |
| The Tempest, Riptide, Super Twister, Wild Whirl | 122cm |
Measure the children at home so nobody hears no at the ride, and head for the Kids Ahoy zone if you have a toddler, because the splash areas are there. Thrillark says the only outside food allowed is bottled water, baby food or medicine, and lockers take cash, so bring small notes. For lunch, Desaru Coast lists Kelong inside the park.
Parking at Desaru Coast
Most guides skip parking, and the official pages barely help: Desaru Coast's visit page has no parking details at all. This table is what we could find on 2 November 2026.
| Place | What is published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hard Rock Hotel, staying | One car per room at no charge | The hotel |
| Hard Rock Hotel, visiting the restaurants, shop, spa, kids club or events | RM8 flat per day. Tap Touch 'n Go, debit or credit card at the Wilson Parking exit barrier. Valet costs extra | The hotel |
| Adventure Waterpark | Nothing on Desaru Coast's pages | Desaru Coast |
| Desaru Fruit Farm | Nothing on its site | The farm |
| Other Desaru Coast hotels | Nothing we could read on their own sites | Ask when you book |
Carry the Touch 'n Go card to every car park, with a debit card as the backup. Before a day trip, ask Desaru Coast's concierge for the waterpark's rate, using the details on its visit page. That page also links the schedule for the hop-on, hop-off shuttle, which can save moving the car if you are staying over.
Red flags and the monsoon
Johor's Fire and Rescue director said in November 2024 that the northeast monsoon runs from November to March and makes sea and river conditions highly unpredictable. Malay Mail describes the state's east coast as dangerous for swimmers towards year-end for that reason.
The case families should know happened on 27 December 2023 on the Westin Desaru Coast beach. Waves hit a Singaporean father and his 16-year-old son at the water's edge, on what Malay Mail reported was believed to be a family holiday. Members of the public rescued the son, and the father's body was found the next morning about 5km away. Penawar's Fire and Rescue commander said a red flag had been raised on the beach.
That same month, the Penawar Fire and Rescue station chief told The Star that Pantai Tanjung Balau is among the three Kota Tinggi beaches with the most drownings. Beaches stay open through the monsoon, with red flags and warning signs, so nobody will stop you walking down to the water. Decide before you arrive that a red flag means staying out, and tell the children that paddling counts. From November to March, we would build the trip around the waterpark, the farm and the hotel pool.
A one-day plan and a weekend plan
A day trip works with one main stop. Crossing the Causeway twice and doing the E22 twice is already a long day for a small child, so we would not try to fit in a second part of Desaru.
| When | The waterpark day | The farm day |
|---|---|---|
| The night before | Top up both cards, print the papers, make the QR code, check the park's calendar | Top up both cards, print the papers, make the QR code, book the farm tour and river cruise |
| Before you start the car | Check the Woodlands camera and read the time stamp | The same |
| Early morning | Cross at Woodlands, since ICA advises non-peak hours | The same |
| Late morning | Toddler zones first, then the wave pool | The farm tour and petting zoo |
| Midday | Lunch at Kelong | Lunch at the farm restaurant |
| Afternoon | Back to the rides your children liked | The Lebam River cruise |
| Heading home | Petrol at Layang, then check the traffic before you commit to a time | The same |
Two days and one night
A night away takes the pressure off the queue, because you can cross early on the first day and late on the second.
- Day one, morning: the farm tour and petting zoo. Add the ATV if the farm says your child is old enough.
- Day one, afternoon: check in, then the hotel pool or a Dash Outdoors session.
- Day one, evening: the fireflies cruise. This is the one that needs a night's stay.
- Day two: Adventure Waterpark, if it is open that day. If it is shut, do the Lebam River cruise and Teluk Sengat instead.
- Day two, late: drive home, with petrol at Layang.
Desaru Coast lists four hotels: Hard Rock, The Westin, Anantara and Mandarin Oriental. Hard Rock has the Roxity Kids Club, and Desaru Coast quotes Tatler calling Anantara a family escape. We have not compared them, so check room sizes for your family before you pick. If you would rather stay closer, our JB day plans and Legoland guide work the same way.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Singapore to Desaru by car?
Desaru Coast says about 1.5 hours from Woodlands Checkpoint, and Hard Rock Hotel says about 2 hours from Singapore by the Causeway. Neither counts the checkpoint queue, which ICA reported at up to three hours at peak over the 2026 National Day weekend.
Which checkpoint is best for Desaru?
Woodlands for most drivers, because the toll is lower and the E22 is reached from the Johor Bahru side. Tuas suits a start in the west of Singapore, but you drive the Second Link Expressway and all 77km of the E22.
How much is the Senai-Desaru Expressway toll?
On the operator's chart, read on 2 November 2026, a car pays RM7.20 from Cahaya Baru to Penawar, RM9.90 from Ulu Tiram and RM13.50 from Senai. It takes Touch 'n Go cards and SmartTAGs.
Is there petrol on the Senai-Desaru Expressway?
Yes, the operator lists a Shell station on each side at Layang, KM32 going east and KM31 going west. A Singapore car may buy RON97 only.
Is parking free at Desaru Coast?
Hard Rock Hotel gives staying guests one free car per room and charges visitors RM8 a day, as read on 2 November 2026. The waterpark's rate is not on Desaru Coast's site, so ask its concierge.
Can children swim at Desaru beach in November?
Only if there is no red flag, and we would plan on staying out. The northeast monsoon runs from November to March, and a Singaporean father died in December 2023 after waves struck him at the water's edge.
Can we do Desaru as a day trip with children?
Yes, with one main stop, such as the waterpark or the fruit farm and a river cruise. Keep the fireflies cruise for a night's stay, since it runs after dark.
