Best food in JB by dish and area: where to eat and where to park
Written and reviewed by the Radiant VEP Solutions team.
JB food sorted by dish and area for a Singapore driver: where to eat asam pedas, laksa Johor, bak kut teh, braised duck and san lou bee hoon, which checkpoint is closer, where the car goes, and what each source says about halal status.
In this article
The best food in JB depends on the dish, because each one has its own part of town. Go through Woodlands for most of it: the old town for chicken chop and herbal roast duck, Kampung Bahru and Larkin for Malay breakfast, Taman Sentosa for bak kut teh, Taman Pelangi for san lou bee hoon. Go through Tuas for Taman Bukit Indah and Skudai, where you'll find beef noodles and braised duck.
In the old town, leave the car at City Square or Komtar JBCC and walk. Elsewhere you're mostly after a street bay, paid through the ParkMax@Johor app. No report we read says whether that app takes a Singapore plate, so try it at home and keep a mall car park as the fallback.
This answers where to eat in JB by dish and area, with no ranking. Every place comes from its own page or a named report, listed in Sources. Halal status appears only where a source states it. Menu prices and opening hours change, so we left them out. Cafes are in our JB cafe guide, and seafood restaurants are a separate trip.
Key takeaways
- Woodlands is the closer crossing for most JB food. Mount Austin is about 25 minutes from it against about 45 from Tuas, says TheSmartLocal.
- Tourism Malaysia warns of limited parking around Hua Mui and Hiap Joo, so use City Square or Komtar JBCC for the old town.
- Sources disagree on whether Hua Mui is halal-certified. Ask at the counter if it matters to you.
- Iskandar Puteri City Council began two-hour limits this October on red bays in Taman Bukit Indah and other spots, Monday to Saturday, The Star reports.
- YouTrip lists many heritage shops and hawkers as cash-only or Touch 'n Go, while cafes take cards, so carry both.

JB food areas compared
Drive times come from the named guide for each area and leave out the checkpoint queue. CIQ means the Malaysian checkpoint at the far end of the Causeway.
| Area | Go for | Closer checkpoint | Where the car goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old town: Jalan Trus, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Jalan Segget, Jalan Wong Ah Fook | Chicken chop, herbal roast duck, curry fish head, banana cake | Woodlands. YouTrip calls it walkable from CIQ | City Square or Komtar JBCC, then walk |
| Jalan Lumba Kuda, Bukit Chagar | Asam pedas and bak kut teh, on the same road | Woodlands | We found no parking report for this road |
| Kampung Bahru, Larkin, Taman Dato Onn | Malay breakfast, laksa Johor, kacang pool, moonlight hor fun | Woodlands, 10 to 12 minutes from CIQ to the two places YouTrip times | Street spots, which Tourism Malaysia calls limited at Kacang Pool Haji |
| Taman Sentosa | Bak kut teh and tze char | Woodlands, near KSL City Mall | Street bay, or KSL City Mall if you're shopping there too |
| Taman Pelangi | San lou bee hoon, hawker char kway teow | Woodlands, about 15 minutes | Street bay. GetGo says Jalan Perang gets hard at lunch, so go early |
| Mount Austin | Nasi kandar, pan mee, dim sum, the food trucks | Woodlands, about 25 minutes, against about 45 from Tuas | Street bay. We couldn't confirm which council runs it |
| Taman Bukit Indah and Skudai | Beef noodles, bak kut teh, braised duck | Tuas, about 20 minutes to Bukit Indah | Street bay. Watch for red two-hour bays |
How we picked the checkpoint
Woodlands puts you on the Causeway and into the middle of Johor Bahru. Tuas puts you on the Second Link in western Johor, and GetGo's help page names Iskandar Puteri and Skudai as the areas near it. Our Woodlands or Tuas guide has the full comparison.
A queue can overturn this. YouTrip's May 2026 food guide says the Woodlands queue on a weekend routinely runs into hours by 10am, and that most heritage breakfast spots sell out by midday. Our JB traffic guide covers the timing.
JB food by dish
Asam pedas
For this sour, spicy fish stew, start with Botak on Jalan Lumba Kuda, which GetGo lists as Jadi Baru Botak and marks halal. Johor Kaki wrote up a newer one in April 2026: Port Asam Pedas by Sang, a certified halal shop in Beletime Mall at Danga Bay, about 10 minutes' drive from CIQ, with torch ginger and laksa leaves in the stew. We found no parking report for either.
Laksa Johor
Laksa Johor comes with spaghetti and a thick gravy, and Pondok Santapan Larkin is the self-service hut on Jalan Puyuh to have it at, along with roti Arab. Seth Lui's review, updated in May 2026, found a queue to the entrance at 9am and suggests about 10am instead. Tourism Malaysia says you may find several parking spots nearby.
WW Laksa House in Taman Kolam Air is a different bowl. Eatbook describes a coconut broth with cockles and tau pok, and people line up for it at breakfast.
Mee rebus and kacang pool
Restoran Tapah Corner 2, on Jalan Sekoi in Bandar Baru Uda, is YouTrip's mee rebus pick, with lontong and banana fritters beside it. Restoran Kacang Pool Haji in Taman Dato Onn makes the bean stew with minced beef and a fried egg, eaten with bread. Onn Kitchen on Jalan Tarom in Kampung Bahru does the roti canai with dhal, and YouTrip warns of 30 minutes' queue on a weekend.
Bak kut teh
Most drivers can settle this in Taman Sentosa, where Eatbook calls Restaurant Shoon Huat on Jalan Sutera 1 a go-to for Singaporeans and also lists Kota Zheng Zong a short way along Jalan Sutera. Two minutes from Shoon Huat, YouTrip says, Restaurant Teck Sing does paper-baked herbal chicken if you'd rather have tze char, and Hai Kah Lang on the same road is the seafood noodle shop in GetGo's guide. Anywhere else, follow your route. Eatbook has Hwa Mei on Jalan Lumba Kuda, Ah Hong in Mount Austin, and Shun Fa in Taman Bukit Indah for anyone using Tuas.
Braised and roast duck
Restoran Ya Wang on Jalan Segget does the herbal roast version, and YouTrip puts it within walking distance of City Square. Kedai Masakan Itik Taika Huat in Skudai has been doing Teochew braised duck since 1973, in an open shop built around big trees, says Eatbook. Restoran Woon Kiang in Taman Stulang Laut serves duck with kway teow kia, and it's a late place, so it suits the drive home.
San lou bee hoon
This is the bee hoon fried until the underside chars, sold in Singapore as chao ta bee hoon. Eatbook says Ah Kaw first made it, and his Restoran Ah Kaw is at 33 Jalan Perang in Taman Pelangi. Restoran Ah Meng in Taman Iskandar is run by his son-in-law, serves almost the same menu and sits a little closer to the Causeway.
Hainanese chicken chop and other old town plates
Restoran Hua Mui has been on Jalan Trus since 1946, and IT Roo Cafe on Jalan Dhoby dates from the 1950s. YouTrip reports about 20 minutes' wait at Hua Mui by 9.30am on a Saturday. Kam Long Ah Zai's claypot curry fish head, five minutes' walk from City Square on Jalan Wong Ah Fook, can sell out early on weekends. Nasi Ayam Kee Chup on Jalan Dato Dalam sells a crisp fried chicken leg with chicken rice, and Tourism Malaysia warns you may have to park a little further off.
Kueh and banana cake
Hiap Joo Bakery on Jalan Tan Hiok Nee bakes its banana cake in a wood-fired oven, and YouTrip says to arrive before noon on weekends. Ah Ma Teochew Kuih at 13 Jalan Trus is the kueh stop we could confirm this year, and it is Teochew. No 2026 report we read names a Nyonya kueh shop, so we haven't named one.
Nasi kandar
Nasi Kandar Marwah is at The Harbour @ Austin Green in Mount Austin, near AEON Mall Tebrau City. GetGo marks it halal and says the room is air-conditioned and the service quick.
Hawker centres and other stops
Medan Selera Meldrum Walk is the central one, an open-air stretch off Jalan Meldrum for satay, oyster omelette and char kway teow in the evening. YouTrip calls it walkable from CIQ and says the halal stalls are clearly labelled. It suits the end of the day, parked at City Square, which allows no overnight parking.
Near KSL City Mall, YouTrip sends you to Cedar Point Food Centre on Jalan Musang Bulan for grilled stingray with sambal, and to Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre on Jalan Badik for oyster omelette and satay. Pelangi Hawker Centre on Jalan Perang has Warung Makanan Penang, whose char kway teow GetGo likes with duck eggs. TEBRAU Food Truck Park, at Taman Desa Tebrau near Mount Austin, runs in the evening.
Off the dish list
- Din Kee Beef Noodle on Jalan Indah 1, Taman Bukit Indah, has been going since 2007 and is an easy first stop out of Tuas.
- Lao Ban Mian does pan mee and Jiah Xiang does dim sum, both in Mount Austin. Pin Ming Xuan is the dim sum pick near KSL, in Taman Century Garden.
- Made on Monday HQ in Sri Gelam serves smoked brisket and burgers in a laid-back room with live singing.
- Thong Bowl at Paradigm Mall makes the giant beef bowl that feeds four. Our JB malls guide has that mall's parking.
- Jane Deer Dessert in Taman Sri Tebrau is the one place in our reading with stated free parking, says YouTrip, and it does Hong Kong desserts.
- Simpang Arang in Gelang Patah is a rustic family-run place in a kampung, which GetGo locates east of Legoland. Pair it with a Legoland drive through Tuas.
- Bisteka on Jalan Beringin, Taman Melodies, is the anniversary dinner, and it has private rooms.
Halal status by place
This table repeats what each source says, and no more. Certified, Muslim-owned and pork-free are three different claims, and a report can age, so check at the counter if it matters to you.
| Place | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Botak, Made on Monday HQ, Thong Bowl, Nasi Kandar Marwah | Halal | GetGo, September 2026 |
| Port Asam Pedas by Sang | Certified halal | Johor Kaki, April 2026 |
| Ong Shun Seafood, Nasi Ayam Kee Chup | Halal-certified | Eatbook, 2026 |
| Pondok Santapan Larkin, Tapah Corner 2, Kacang Pool Haji, Onn Kitchen | Listed as halal-certified | YouTrip, May 2026 |
| Hiap Joo Bakery | Halal-certified | Tourism Malaysia, undated |
| Dusk by Mok Mok, Simpang Arang, Bisteka | No pork or lard, not certified | GetGo, September 2026 |
| Restoran Sulam | Chinese-owned, not certified, Muslim-friendly | Eatbook, August 2026 |
| Jane Deer Dessert | No-pork-no-lard kitchen | YouTrip, May 2026 |
| Hai Kah Lang, Pin Ming Xuan, Warung Makanan Penang | Not halal | GetGo, September 2026 |
| Ah Kaw, Ah Meng, Teck Sing, Shoon Huat, Kota Zheng Zong, Hwa Mei, Ah Hong, Shun Fa, Ya Wang, Taika Huat, Woon Kiang, WW Laksa House, Din Kee | Not halal-certified | Eatbook, 2025 and 2026 |
Two tze char names belong here because they answer a common question. Ong Shun on Jalan Abdul Samad in Kampung Bahru does moonlight hor fun, about eight minutes from City Square by YouTrip's count. Restoran Sulam in Taman Sentosa is the curry fish head option.
The Hua Mui question
Sources disagree here. Eatbook's February 2026 review says Hua Mui is not halal-certified. YouTrip in May 2026 and Daniel Food Diary in July 2026 say it is. Tourism Malaysia's undated feature says JAKIM has approved the central kitchen, that certification for each branch was in progress, and that all locations are pork-free. Ask at the Jalan Trus shop.
Where to park for JB food
Old town: use the malls
Tourism Malaysia says the spots around Hua Mui are limited and that Hiap Joo means parking further off and walking, so we'd go straight to a mall. Komtar JBCC's multi-level car park is paid at the exit gantry by Touch 'n Go, Visa, Mastercard or MyDebit, with reload points on Levels 3 and 4. City Square takes Touch 'n Go or card, and a sheltered bridge links the two. YouTrip's September 2026 guide says the old town is a short walk from City Square. The works there run on with the mall open.
Downtown street bays are the harder bet. The Straits Times, as reported by Malay Mail in June 2025, found kopitiam customers struggling for lots because workers heading to Singapore held bays all day, and said officers regularly tow cars left illegally on the roadside.
Street bays and ParkMax@Johor
ParkMax@Johor has been the parking app for seven Johor councils since 1 June 2026, and credit can move across from MBJBSpot until 31 December, The Iskandarian and The Star report. GetGo's help page still sends drivers to MBJBSpot for Johor Bahru City Council streets such as Taman Sentosa and Stulang, so don't take your app choice from older pages. That same page says street bays charge from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, free on Sundays and Malaysian public holidays. Go by the signboard, because it is the one source we found for those hours.
Install the app before you leave home and try adding your plate. If it refuses, drive to a mall car park rather than leaving the bay unpaid.
Red bays on the Tuas side
Iskandar Puteri City Council began enforcing two-hour limits this October, The Star reported on 3 October 2026. Bays painted red carry the limit from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm. They include Jalan Indah 15/1, 15/2 and 15/3 in Taman Bukit Indah, Jalan Pahlawan 1 in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, parts of Taman Perling and Taman Nusa Perintis in Gelang Patah. The mayor told the same paper in July that commuters fill Jalan Indah 15/2 by 8am on a weekday and that these bays clear only on weekends and shared public holidays.
What the crossing needs
LTA wants the tank at least three-quarters full when you leave Singapore, a stored-value card with enough for the toll, a valid driving licence, and printed copies of your certificate of insurance and road tax validity. The checkpoints have no top-up machines, so top up the card at home. The Causeway checklist sets out both sides of the border.
ICA's MyICA app generates the QR code for immigration at Woodlands and Tuas. On the Malaysian side, JPJ's FAQ, read on 2 November 2026, puts the road charge for foreign private cars at RM20 per entry, paid by Touch 'n Go card or eWallet. PLUS takes the Touch 'n Go card and SmartTAG on its expressways, which matters if you come in through Tuas.
Before you choose Tuas, look at the traffic cameras, because ICA said on 26 August 2026 that parts of the departure car zones would close in phases until late 2027, The Star reported from The Straits Times.
For the food itself you'll want ringgit as well as the card. YouTrip lists Hua Mui, Hiap Joo, Kam Long, Meldrum Walk and Cedar Point as cash-only or Touch 'n Go, with cards working at most modern cafes and sit-down restaurants.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best food in JB?
We haven't ranked it, because it depends on the dish. The names that recur across guides are asam pedas at Botak, laksa Johor at Pondok Santapan Larkin, bak kut teh in Taman Sentosa, san lou bee hoon at Ah Kaw and chicken chop on Jalan Trus.
Where to eat in JB if you're driving from Woodlands?
The old town if you want to park once and walk, with the car at City Square or Komtar JBCC. Taman Sentosa and Taman Pelangi are the next ones out, and Eatbook puts Taman Pelangi about 15 minutes from the checkpoint.
Where can Muslim travellers eat in JB?
Kampung Bahru and Larkin are the easy start, with Pondok Santapan Larkin, Kacang Pool Haji, Onn Kitchen and Ong Shun listed as halal-certified by YouTrip or Eatbook. GetGo marks Botak and Nasi Kandar Marwah halal.
Is Hua Mui halal?
Sources disagree. YouTrip and Daniel Food Diary say halal-certified, Eatbook says not, and Tourism Malaysia says the central kitchen is JAKIM-approved with branch certification in progress and all locations pork-free. Ask at the shop.
Can a Singapore car use ParkMax@Johor?
We found nothing that says either way. Try adding your plate in the app before you leave home, and use a mall car park if it refuses.
Do JB hawker stalls take cards?
Mostly not. YouTrip says hawker stalls and heritage shops run on cash or Touch 'n Go, while modern cafes and restaurants take cards, so bring some ringgit.
