Things to do in JB in a day by car: three plans from Singapore
Written and reviewed by the Radiant VEP Solutions team.
Three one-day JB plans for a Singapore driver: family, food and shopping, heritage and nature. Each gives the checkpoint, the stops grouped by area and when to head home, with the rest of Johor sorted by area for another day.
In this article
The things to do in JB that fit one day by car are one main stop and one or two places near it. Add a third part of town and you spend the afternoon driving. Use Woodlands for anything in the city, which covers all three plans below. Use Tuas if the day is Legoland, the rest of Iskandar Puteri or Johor Premium Outlets.
The order barely changes between plans. Cross early, do the outdoor stops in the morning, eat dinner in JB and drive home late in the evening. ICA's advice is to travel at non-peak hours, such as early mornings and late evenings.
We left out ticket prices and opening hours because they change, so look up each place's closing day before you set off. This page is about the day itself. For what to carry, use our Causeway checklist.
Key takeaways
- Family, without Legoland: cross at Woodlands, then Johor Zoo, Danga Park and Kidz Republic at Komtar JBCC, which is beside the checkpoint.
- Food and shopping: cross at Woodlands, eat breakfast in the old downtown, shop on the eastern side of the city in the afternoon and have dinner at Taman Sentosa.
- Heritage and nature: cross at Woodlands, walk Hutan Bandar MBJB first, then see Kompleks Warisan, the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque from outside and Jalan Trus.
- MHA's 2019 figures put weekday traffic at the checkpoints highest from 5am to 10am and 5pm to 9pm, so avoid starting for home in the evening block.
- Johor Royal Botanical Garden and the Royal Abu Bakar Museum are not in these plans, because we could not confirm either is open to the public.

Three JB day plans compared
Each city plan is a short loop out from BSI and back, with the old downtown done on foot. Legoland is the exception, because it fills the day where it stands.
| Plan | Checkpoint | Stops, in order | Last stop before home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family | Woodlands | Johor Zoo, Danga Park, Kidz Republic at Komtar JBCC | Komtar JBCC, beside the checkpoint |
| Family, Legoland | Tuas | Legoland Malaysia for the whole day | Legoland Malaysia |
| Food and shopping | Woodlands | Old downtown, Mid Valley Southkey or AEON Tebrau City, Taman Sentosa | Taman Sentosa |
| Heritage and nature | Woodlands | Hutan Bandar MBJB, Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar, Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, Jalan Trus and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee | Old downtown |
Woodlands or Tuas
Woodlands takes you over the Causeway to Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI), in the city, for a toll LTA sets at S$0.80 going out and nothing coming back. Tuas costs S$2.10 each way and puts you on the Second Link in western Johor, on a 47km expressway that PLUS runs up to the North-South Expressway. ICA said in August 2026 that parts of the Tuas departure car zones would close in phases until late 2027, as The Straits Times reported, so look at its cameras first. Our Woodlands or Tuas guide has the full comparison.
Family day
Both outdoor stops come first, because YouTrip's January 2026 guide puts JB's wettest months at November to January and suggests saving indoor plans for midday.
- Start at Johor Zoo, which TheSmartLocal puts 10 minutes by car from the checkpoint. Bernama reports that it opened in 1928 and reopened on 31 August 2024 after an upgrade, and TheSmartLocal describes wider walkways, rest areas for families and a new reptile house.
- Drive west to Danga Park at Danga Bay, which opened in late May 2026 and which TheSmartLocal puts 10 to 15 minutes from the checkpoint. Children get tiger-shaped and octopus-shaped playgrounds and water play zones, so pack a change of clothes. The playgrounds are for under-10s, under-7s need an adult with them, and foreign visitors buy tickets from a kiosk on site.
- Come back east to Komtar JBCC for Kidz Republic Indoor Theme Park on Level 3, which YouTrip's September 2026 guide describes as a dinosaur-themed indoor playground with a trampoline zone. Most of the mall's restaurants are on Level 2, so dinner is one floor down, and the car park takes Touch 'n Go, Visa, Mastercard or MyDebit at the exit.
- Drive home through BSI, which YouTrip puts about a 5-minute walk from the mall.
Staying out later
Johor Zoo also runs a night zoo on some nights of the week, TheSmartLocal reported in April 2026. Older children could swap the morning visit for that one, since the plan already has you leaving JB in the late evening.
If the day is Legoland
Use Tuas and give it the whole day. Our Legoland Malaysia guide covers the route to Exit 312, where to park and how to plan the rides around the weather. RUD Karting Medini is in the same part of Iskandar Puteri if older children still have energy afterwards.
Food and shopping day
Cross early for this one. YouTrip's May 2026 food guide says the Woodlands queue on a weekend routinely reaches hours by 10am, and that most heritage breakfast places sell out by midday.
- Park once in the city and walk. City Square and Komtar JBCC both have car parks that take Touch 'n Go or a card, and YouTrip says the old downtown is walkable from City Square. Street parking goes through the ParkMax@Johor app, The Iskandarian reported in April 2026.
- Have breakfast in the old downtown. YouTrip names Restoran Hua Mui on Jalan Trus for charcoal-grilled kaya toast, served there since 1946, with Kin Hua a few doors along. Bernama reported in June 2026 that Hiap Joo Bakery, founded in 1919, still bakes its banana cake in a century-old wood-fired oven.
- Walk it off along Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, which have the shophouses, the murals and thrift shops such as Kedai Dhoby Shanghai, then stop for lunch. YouTrip's picks are IT Roo Cafe's chicken chop on Jalan Dhoby and Kam Long's curry fish head on Jalan Wong Ah Fook.
- Drive east for the afternoon's shopping at Mid Valley Southkey, which Tourism Malaysia calls a 10-minute drive on the Eastern Dispersal Link, or further out to AEON Tebrau City, which YouTrip puts 20 to 30 minutes from Woodlands. Our JB mall guide compares them and covers parking.
- Eat dinner at Taman Sentosa near KSL City Mall, where YouTrip lists Teck Sing for paper-baked chicken, Shoon Huat for bak kut teh and Hai Kah Lang for seafood soup, and carry on to BSI from there.
Swaps for this day
If you would rather sit in cafes than shop, YouTrip says Mount Austin and Taman Melodies are 15 to 20 minutes from the checkpoint by Grab and fill an afternoon. For outlet brands, cross at Tuas for Johor Premium Outlets and leave the old downtown for another day. Tourism Malaysia's figure for that drive is about an hour from Singapore, with traffic on top.
Heritage and nature day
The walk comes first, then the stops run east through the city towards the checkpoint.
- Walk Hutan Bandar MBJB on Jalan Tasek Utara, in Kolam Ayer. The Star reported in March 2026 that this city park had reopened refurbished, with walking trails, a flying fox, a swimming pool and a water play area, and one visitor told the paper she came at around 9.30am to beat the heat.
- Go on to Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar on Jalan Sungai Chat, not to be confused with Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar, the Malaysian checkpoint after Tuas. The Star reported it welcoming visitors from 3 June 2026, with galleries on Johor's woven textiles and traditional dishes, and Tourism Malaysia lists the Johor Art Gallery and Rumah Limas Johor there as well.
- See the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque on Jalan Gertak Merah from outside. Tourism Johor dates it to 1892 and says it faces the Tebrau Strait, while YouTrip says visitors cannot enter the grounds.
- Park in the old downtown and walk. YouTrip dates Johor Ancient Temple on Jalan Trus to the 1870s, and TheSmartLocal describes the Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum's displays on how Chinese settlers made their lives here. Tourism Malaysia covers the murals and old shophouses of Jalan Dhoby, along with the Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple, established in 1922 and covered in over 300,000 pieces of mosaic.
- Finish at Medan Selera Meldrum Walk, which YouTrip lists as a hawker dinner within 10 minutes of City Square, then drive home through BSI.
Muzium Tokoh Johor at Bukit Senyum reopened on 5 June 2026, The Star reported, and can replace stop 2 if you would rather read about Johor's prominent figures.
Two places we left out of this plan
Johor Royal Botanical Garden was due to reopen on 31 August 2025, and some guides still say it did. The Star reported on 28 August 2025 that the state had postponed the date for safety work, and we found no later report that it opened. The Royal Abu Bakar Museum is in the Istana Besar grounds, and although the Prime Minister visited it in February 2026 (Malay Mail), we found nothing saying the public can go in.
A nature day instead
Tanjung Piai National Park and Gunung Pulai each need the day to themselves. Johor National Parks describes Tanjung Piai as the southernmost point of mainland Asia, with 1.2km of boardwalks among the mangroves. It publishes a route from Johor Bahru along Jalan Skudai to Pontian but none from the Second Link, so compare Tuas on your map before you choose. Gunung Pulai's waterfall has pools at its base, and Tourism Malaysia puts it about an hour's drive from Johor Bahru.
When to head home
ICA's standing advice names early mornings and late evenings and tells drivers to check traffic before they set off. It gives no hours, and we found no published queue time for the drive back into Singapore.
| Figure | Source | What it means for your day |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday traffic highest from 5am to 10am and 5pm to 9pm | MHA, November 2019 | The newest hour-by-hour figures we found. Avoid starting for home between 5pm and 9pm on a weekday |
| Waits at the Singapore checkpoints of up to 1.5 hours at peak and 30 minutes off-peak, not counting Malaysian clearance | MHA, November 2019 | A gap of up to an hour on those figures, which is why dinner comes before the drive |
| Up to three hours for cars leaving Singapore at peak hours, over the 2026 National Day weekend | ICA, 31 August 2026 | On a holiday weekend, cut a stop and allow for far longer queues |
Before you start the car
LTA's traffic cameras page on OneMotoring has three views each for Woodlands and Tuas, and every picture is stamped with its date and time, so read the time before the traffic. Top up your toll card before you reach the checkpoint if it needs it, because LTA says neither has a top-up machine. Our QR clearance guide covers the MyICA code.
Dates to avoid in 2026
Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November and Monday 9 November is a public holiday (MOM). School holidays run from 21 November to 31 December for primary and secondary schools (MOE).
Other things to do in JB, by area
This is the rest of the list, sorted by where it is, so you can swap a stop without crossing town. Everything here was named in a 2026 report or on an official tourism page, and the grouping is by area with no ranking.
| Area | Crossing | What is there |
|---|---|---|
| Beside the checkpoint | Woodlands | Skyscape observation deck in Menara JLand; Thai Odyssey massage at Komtar JBCC; City Square for food during its works; Laser Battle, which YouTrip says has moved to R&F Mall |
| Danga Bay | Woodlands | Danga Park; Lido Beach, a small stretch of sand with sea views |
| Eastern city | Woodlands | KSL City Mall; Toppen, with IKEA and Game On Themepark |
| Mount Austin | Woodlands | Cafes, including pet cafes; The Escaper's escape rooms; Chun K Music Karaoke |
| Tampoi | Woodlands | B5 Johor Street Market, a street-style bazaar and food market |
| Skudai | Either | Paradigm Mall, with an ice rink and the CAMP5 climbing gym; Sutera Mall, with RUD Karting |
| Iskandar Puteri | Tuas | Legoland Malaysia, RUD Karting Medini, X Park Sunway Iskandar, Puteri Harbour |
| Kulai | Tuas | Johor Premium Outlets |
Too far to pair with a second stop
These take the whole day on their own. Tourism Malaysia puts UK Farm at Kluang and Desaru Beach each about 1 hour 30 minutes from Johor Bahru, and Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast about two hours from Singapore. Kota Tinggi Firefly Park is a boat trip after dark, which Tourism Johor's 2021 account puts two hours from Singapore and YouTrip listed again in January 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What can I do in JB in one day by car?
One main stop and one or two near it. Johor Zoo, Danga Park and Komtar JBCC make a family day, while the old downtown, a mall and dinner at Taman Sentosa make a food and shopping day.
Which checkpoint should I use for a JB day trip?
Woodlands for the city, because BSI is in the middle of Johor Bahru. Tuas for Legoland, Iskandar Puteri and Johor Premium Outlets, though parts of its departure car zones are closing in phases until late 2027.
When should I leave JB to drive back to Singapore?
ICA suggests non-peak hours such as late evenings. MHA's 2019 figures put the weekday evening peak at 5pm to 9pm, so eat dinner first and check LTA's cameras.
What can children do in JB apart from Legoland?
Johor Zoo, the playgrounds and water play at Danga Park, and Kidz Republic at Komtar JBCC all sit within reach of the Woodlands crossing. Game On Themepark at Toppen is another option on the eastern side.
Is Danga Bay open again?
Yes, Danga Park, the rebuilt public park at Danga Bay, opened on 29 May 2026 according to The Iskandarian, although older guides still list the park there as closed.
Can I go inside the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque in JB?
Plan to see it from outside, since YouTrip's January 2026 guide says visitors cannot enter the grounds and we found no official visitor rules that say otherwise.
Is the Johor Royal Botanical Garden open?
We could not confirm it. The Star reported on 28 August 2025 that the reopening was postponed, and we found no later report of it opening, so check with the state's tourism office before you plan around it.
