EV charging in Malaysia: what works for a Singapore car and account

Written and reviewed by the Radiant VEP Solutions team.

The SP app is the one setup written for a Singapore account in Malaysia, at selected JomCharge sites. Plugs match on CCS2 and Type 2. No network we checked says whether it takes a +65 number or a Singapore plate, so test each app before you cross.

For EV charging in Malaysia on a Singapore account, start with the SP app. Since 30 October 2025 it has found, started and paid for sessions at selected JomCharge chargers, billed to your card in Singapore dollars with a 5% platform fee on top. Beyond that list, chargEV, JomCharge, Gentari Go and Touch 'n Go eWallet are the apps to try, but none of them publishes a plain yes or no on a +65 number or a Singapore plate. Install and test them at home.

The plug is the easy part. Singapore's public chargers use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC, and PLUS says its highway chargers are CCS2. You can plan on chargers around JB, along the North-South Expressway through KL, and as far as Ipoh and Penang on SP's own list. Check each stop in your direction of travel, because the two sides of a highway can have different networks, or a charger on one side only.

    Key takeaways

    • Set up the SP app first: it needs a registered card, data roaming and an up-to-date app, and you do not need a second app for JomCharge sites on its list.
    • SP bills Malaysian sessions in Singapore dollars, adds a 5% platform fee with GST on that fee, and gives no ChargeUP points, discounts or credits there.
    • A CCS2 and Type 2 car fits the mainstream chargers. CHAdeMO is limited on chargEV, and chargEV has no Type 1 connectors.
    • On chargEV, register your card under the country you plan to charge in. It does not take AMEX or GX cards, and it holds RM100 on the card when a session starts in Malaysia.
    • Look up the stop for your direction of travel. PLUS tags Tangkak southbound with Shell Recharge and shows no operator at Tangkak northbound.

Which apps work with a Singapore account

Malaysia's networks run on separate apps, with some roaming between them. This is what each operator's own pages say, read on 3 November 2026. Where a page is silent, the table says so.

    SP app

This is the only route we found that says outright it is for a Singapore driver. Update the app, register a payment card and turn on data roaming. SP tags the chargers with "(JomCharge)" after the name, and typing "Malaysia" in the search bar brings them up. Guest Checkout does not work there. SP says these roaming chargers have their own cable, so you do not need yours.

Read the fine print on money. You cannot choose the currency. The 5% platform fee is billed in Singapore dollars, with GST on it, which SP put at 9% in October 2025. ChargeUP points, subscription rates, credits and vouchers stop at the border. SP also says only a small part of JomCharge's network opened at launch. Its update of 23 October 2026 gives 970+ points in 320+ locations across the Causeway, and it does not split that figure by country.

    chargEV

The site describes stations across Malaysia and Singapore, and the app was relaunched as chargEV 2.0 on 28 July 2026 with a trip planner and AutoCharge. Tap Register, add a card, plug in first, then pick the bay in the app. The help page says to register your card under the country where you plan to charge, so choose Malaysia for this trip. It does not say whether a Singapore-issued card passes under that setting. Expect a pre-authorisation charge of RM1.01 when you add it, which is credited back in 3 to 21 working days.

Gentari Go and Touch 'n Go eWallet

Gentari says it runs more than 600 points in Malaysia and reaches over 18,000 through its roaming hub. When the app launched in February 2024, paultan.org reported it on the Malaysian app stores only. We could not confirm whether that still holds, so look it up on your Singapore store account first. Gentari's AutoCharge also asks you to verify a mobile number.

Touch 'n Go eWallet added cross-border roaming in October 2025, paid from your balance with no card to link. Carz Automedia reported JomCharge, Gentari, ChargeSini and chargEV as left out at launch, so it adds other networks and does not replace these apps. Auto-reload is unavailable on accounts with a non-Malaysian number, so top up before a long leg.

Foreign plates and Singapore phone numbers

This is the question owners ask, and the operators have not answered it in public. We read the help pages of chargEV, SP and Touch 'n Go, Gentari's site and JomCharge's site. None asks for a Malaysian plate, and none says a Singapore plate is accepted or refused. Only Touch 'n Go addresses the phone number directly. Its article, updated in May 2025, says you can register with a number from an eligible country, and the country list did not load for us.

The features that do care about your car look at the car, not the plate. chargEV's AutoCharge works from a saved vehicle and warns that not every EV qualifies. City Energy's AutoCharge is set up once with the VIN, on DC chargers only, for Aion, BYD, Chery, MG and Tesla at the time Tech Edition reported it in July 2025. Skip AutoCharge for your first trip and start sessions by hand.

So test at home. Install each app, register with your Singapore number and add your card while you still have time to email support. A failed sign-up is a small problem in your driveway and a bigger one in a mall basement with a low battery. SP's page also gives a Singapore WhatsApp line for JomCharge issues.

    Connector compatibility

LTA's guidelines say publicly accessible fixed chargers in Singapore come with Type 2 AC or CCS2 DC connectors, with CHAdeMO only as an extra. Malaysia's networks line up on the same two.

What each connector can expect in Malaysia
Your car's inletWhat the operators sayWhat to do
CCS2 and Type 2PLUS says the chargers on its highways have CCS2 connectors. chargEV has Type 2 and CCS2Nothing extra for most stops
CHAdeMOchargEV says the number is limited. PLUS names only CCS2 for its highway pointsFilter by connector and plan each DC stop before you leave
Type 1chargEV has no Type 1 connectors and says these cars need an adaptorCarry the adaptor

Cables are less settled. SP says JomCharge's roaming chargers have their own. chargEV's help describes releasing a gun from its AC charger, so at least some of its AC units come with one attached. No operator promises that at every AC bay, so bring your Type 2 cable if you own one.

A plug-in hybrid is a car with both problems: it has to find a Type 2 point and it still has a petrol tank. Our petrol guide covers the RON97 rule for that tank.

    Charging along the North-South Expressway

PLUS said on 18 August 2025 that 112 charging points were working on its network as of 30 June that year, all of them DC at 47kW to 200kW and placed at selected rest areas, lay-bys and petrol stations. How fast you get to its quoted 80% in 15 to 30 minutes comes down to your car and how flat the battery is. The New Straits Times put the count at 118 on 25 August 2026 and repeated the target of 350 by 2028 across the North-South Expressway and East Coast Expressway 2. It also reported that not every rest area petrol station has one.

These stops are named by PLUS or by a network, grouped by state. Treat this as a starting list, not a complete one.

Direction is what catches people out. PLUS tags Tapah with Shell Recharge going south and TNB Electron going north, so an app that works on the way up can be no use on the way back. PLUS's facilities page tags a charger at Tangkak southbound, shows no operator at Tangkak northbound, and shows no charger at Yong Peng in either direction. Check the return leg on the day you set off, in the PLUS app or the network's own.

Seremban is the stop most worth watching. PLUS's page for the R&R describes an EV Hyperstation with 8 high-power charging points, and it expects a highway hub on the southbound side, run by Terra ChargEV, to be fully working by the first quarter of 2027. Our Singapore to KL guide has the rest of the route.

EV charging in JB: malls and stops

We looked for the malls' own word first. The pages we could open for Mid Valley Southkey, Paradigm Mall JB, Johor Premium Outlets and IKEA Tebrau do not mention chargers, so this list comes from the networks and from named reports. Our JB malls guide covers which one suits your trip, and the parking guide covers what you pay to stay in the bay.

Gentari's list and the June 2025 report disagree on Mid Valley Southkey, which is why you should open the app before you choose it for a quick top-up. An AC point suits a day of shopping, while a car short of range on the way home wants a DC site and some charge left over for the queue at the crossing. The JB traffic guide covers when that builds.

On Tesla, paultan.org's 2023 report said the Sunway Big Box site would serve Tesla owners from Johor and Singapore. Non-Tesla access is a different matter: paultan.org's March 2026 report mentions it only for four Klang Valley sites, and we found nothing saying it applies in Johor.

    What charging costs

We print no price per kWh here. chargEV and Shell Recharge show the rate on each station in the app, and it changes by site. Gentari's public pages did not list one, and we could not reach a TNB Electron page. A figure from a news report would be out of date before you used it, so read the rate on the charger's page in the app before you tap start. These are the amounts the networks do publish, read on 3 November 2026.

Published charges and holds in Malaysia

Gentari Go StarterAnnual plan for 15% off, Malaysia only, excludes roaming pointsRM350 a year
Gentari Go PlusAnnual plan for 30% off, Malaysia only, excludes roaming pointsRM699 a year

We would not buy a Gentari plan for a few trips a year. The hold matters more than it looks: chargEV stops the session if the charge reaches the pre-authorised limit, so a card close to its limit can end a stop early. Leave room on the card.

Move the car when it finishes. chargEV charges idle fees after a grace period that varies by site and shows on the connector's details in the app. Gentari began phasing in idle fees at its chargers on 30 March 2026, though not at hotels and resorts.

At the crossing in an EV

Nothing we read treats a Singapore EV differently at the crossing, so plan on the same trip as any Singapore car. That includes Malaysia's road charge of RM20 per entry for foreign-registered private vehicles, because the exemptions in JPJ's FAQ cover government, embassy and commercial vehicles and motorcycles but not electric cars. Our Causeway checklist has what to carry, and the Woodlands or Tuas guide helps you pick a side.

    The three-quarter tank rule

Singapore Customs words the rule for vehicles running on petrol, diesel or CNG, and its page does not mention electric cars. A fully electric car has no fuel tank to fill, but we found no official line that says so outright. A plug-in hybrid is a different case: LTA's OneMotoring page says the rule covers hybrid vehicles, so fill up before you leave.

We also found no rule setting a battery level for leaving Singapore. Leaving with plenty of charge is just good sense, since the queue uses power too. Give yourself enough to reach a second charger if the first one is taken or out of order.

How far you can plan on

The answer depends on which app you have set up. SP's own list runs up to Ipoh and Penang and into Cameron Highlands, which is a fair way on one account. Get Gentari Go or chargEV working as well and the east coast opens up.

We give no distance per charge, because that depends on your car, your speed and the weather, and no operator we read publishes a figure for a Singapore driver. Use chargEV's trip planner, which asks for your EV and its state of charge and suggests chargers along the route. PLUS points to its own mobile app for locating highway chargers. Motorist listed A Better Routeplanner and PlugShare as finders in 2021, and we could not load either site to check what they show today.

Keep a fallback for every leg, on a second network if you can. For a first trip, the JB day trip guide is a short way to try your apps with Singapore still close behind you.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I use the SP app to charge in Malaysia?

Yes, at selected JomCharge chargers. You need a registered card and data roaming, and you pay in Singapore dollars with a 5% platform fee plus GST on that fee.

Does chargEV work with a Singapore phone number?

chargEV does not publish a rule either way. Try the registration at home before your trip, and email support if it fails.

Do Malaysian charging apps accept a Singapore plate?

We could not confirm it for any network. None of the pages we read asks for a Malaysian plate, and none says a Singapore plate is accepted or refused.

Will my Singapore EV's plug fit Malaysian chargers?

A car with CCS2 and Type 2 should fit the mainstream chargers. chargEV has few CHAdeMO connectors and no Type 1 connectors, so those cars need more planning or an adaptor.

Do I need to bring my own charging cable?

SP says JomCharge's roaming chargers have their own cable. No operator promises one at every AC bay, so bring a Type 2 cable if you own one.

Is an electric car exempt from Malaysia's RM20 road charge?

We found no exemption. JPJ's FAQ exempts government, embassy and commercial vehicles and motorcycles, and it does not list electric cars.

Does the three-quarter tank rule apply to an EV?

Singapore Customs words the rule for petrol, diesel and CNG vehicles and does not mention electric cars. LTA's OneMotoring page does cover hybrids, so a plug-in hybrid still needs the fuel.
